‘Inside Out 2’ Record the Second Biggest Global Opening Weekend Ever for an Animated Film, After ‘The Super Mario Bros.’

Inside Out 2 has easily been one of the most anticipated releases of 2024’s summer and in making a name at the box office, it has been doing wonders. Although success stories are often not built overnight, with Inside Out 2, the impossible has been managed as after its Marvel-sized theatrical success, it has earned the spot of the second biggest global opening weekend for an animated film after The Super Mario Bros.Movie box office frenzy last year.

Even though box office prognosticators predicted Inside Out 2 might replicate the success of the original, given its trailblazing conduct, who knows? It may even surpass the parent film.

Inside Out 2 had the biggest opening weekend in the US this year, earning $85 million, marking the largest debut for a Disney animated film post-pandemic and achieving Marvel-level success. The movie dominated the box-office charts, grossing an estimated $295 million globally over the weekend, as per Walt Disney’s declaration. Last year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie set a record with a $377.5 million worldwide opening, the highest ever for an animated film.

Internationally, Inside Out 2 achieved the biggest animated opening of all time in comparable markets at current exchange rates, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which had a five-day debut over the Easter weekend. Domestically, Inside Out 2 had the largest opening of the year, outpacing Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $82.5 million and $80 million, respectively.

Though Inside Out 2 fell short of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s global opening weekend total, it made history by outperforming it domestically.

Before the release of Inside Out 2 this weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie held the second spot for the highest opening in North American theaters in 2023, with $146.3 million. The biggest Disney-Pixar opening domestically was Incredibles 2 in 2018, which earned $182.6 million. Although Inside Out 2 has already surpassed its predecessor with its opening weekend, with its domestic records, it has left The Super Mario Bros. Movie behind as well.

With the debut of Inside Out 2, the movie has now taken the second-highest opening for an animated film ever at the box office, behind only Incredibles 2. Additionally, it is the first film since last July’s Barbie to open with more than $100 million. Thus, it is fair to say Inside Out 2 is poised to make history in the animation industry, and its impressive box office numbers confirm this.
