New York Giants are the first NFL team eliminated from the playoff picture

On Thanksgiving Day, the New York Giants earned the dubious distinction of being the first team eliminated from the NFL Playoff Picture. They didn’t even make it to December.

What are the NFC East standings?

The Giants currently sit at 2-10, 7.5 games back of the Philadelphia Eagles in first place. With only six games left for the Eagles and five for the Giants, there was no way to climb out of the hole entering Week 13 and they were already eliminated there.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles 9-2
  2. Washington Commanders 7-5
  3. Dallas Cowboys 5-7
  4. New York Giants 2-10

NFC Wild Card race is over for the Giants now

In the NFC Wild Card race, the team in the seventh and final spot is 7-5. The Washington Commanders have beaten the Giants twice, however, so if both teams were 7-10 in an unlikely tiebreaker scenario for the Wild Card, Washington would win based on the head-to-head tiebreaker. That’s why the Giants were officially eliminated with their latest loss.

When is the last time the Giants made the playoffs?

The Giants were last in the postseason in 2022, when they rode an insanely hot 6-1 and 7-2 start to a rather lousy 9-7-1 record and a Wild Card spot. They won in their first game, defeating the Minnesota Vikings and advancing to the divisional round where they were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Giants were Wild Card teams in 2022 and 2016, and haven’t won the division since 2011 (ultimately winning the Super Bowl). They’ve made the postseason just those three times since 2008.
