Pride Month: ‘House of the Dragon’s Matt Smith Wins Over Everyone With This Subtle Stand for Co-Star Emma D’Arcy
Pride Month is upon us, and much like every year, it is being celebrated all around the globe with dignity. Not just commoners, but even celebrities join in on the celebration of liberation during this special month. And one of the first steps toward honoring Pride Month is respecting personal pronouns, a concept that was foreign three centuries ago. Amid the excitement of Pride Month, actor Matthew Robert Smith has taken a stand for his co-star Emma D’Arcy.
Smith recently stopped for a chat with Sue Perkins at the House of the Dragon Season 2 premiere in London. Emma D’Arcy, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, was misidentified by Perkins. The reporter used “she” pronouns to refer to D’Arcy while talking about the climactic moment in the first season finale. Sharing D’Arcy’s response to the scene from an earlier interview, Perkins stated, “she gave you all the credit.” Matt Smith quickly corrected the reporter in the next line by using the correct pronoun for D’Arcy.

“I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” said the 41-year-old. Smith has always been a fan of D’Arcy and even admitted in a Variety cover story that his reduced screen time with the Wanderlust star in House of the Dragon Season 2 made the process difficult for him. Nonetheless, this latest interaction between Smith and Perkins earned huge praise for the English actor.
Fans flocked to X, appreciating Matt Smith’s gesture of honoring Emma D’Arcy with the right pronouns.
Fans applaud Matt Smith for standing up for Emma D’Arcy
While one should be careful about assuming the genders of others, not everyone does so with ill intentions. Therefore, it is important to correct the person without being unkind. And Matt Smith is garnering heaps of appreciation for this very reason, as he was seen effortlessly correcting Sue Perkins without making the situation uncomfortable.
Fans praised the actor for handling the situation gracefully.
Some, however, blamed the interviewer for not doing her homework correctly.
