Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel has ruled that Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey should have been sent off for bringing down Cristian Romero during a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, British media reported on Friday.
Spurs defender Romero suffered a season-ending injury as he collided with his team’s goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after Brobbey, already on a yellow card, pushed him in the second half.
Referee Rob Jones called the foul but chose not to show Brobbey a second yellow card, as Spurs suffered their seventh loss in eight league games to remain in the bottom three, with the threat of relegation looming.
The KMI panel voted 3-2 to rule that Jones had made a mistake, with the majority saying that the push was an “unnecessarily reckless action,” media reports said.
Spurs, 18th in the standings amid a 15-match winless streak in the league, visit bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday while Argentina’s Romero remains a doubt for this year’s World Cup.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed on Friday that Cristian Romero will miss the rest of Tottenham’s battle for Premier League survival, but remains optimistic that just one win can transform his side’s fortunes.
Romero suffered a knee injury, which could also endanger his place in Argentina’s World Cup squad, during last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by Sunderland in De Zerbi’s first match in charge.
“I am really sorry for him and his injury,” said De Zerbi.
“Romero first of all loves Tottenham and the people have to know he is suffering for this injury and because he cannot play any more for us this season,” he added.
Without a win in 14 league games, Spurs are two points adrift of safety with six matches of the campaign to go.
But victory against De Zerbi’s former club Brighton on Saturday would propel Tottenham out of the bottom three for at least 48 hours.
“I think it is crucial to win a game not just for the table. Of course, one part of the table for sure, but we have to feel again what it is nice to win a game and what it can do. I have no doubts about the quality of the players,” De Zerbi said.

In a bid to build team chemistry, De Zerbi took his players out to dinner this week in London’s Mayfair. The Italian is happy to pick up the bill for more dinners in the coming weeks if he is rewarded with results on the field.
“The food was amazing and if we win, I am ready to pay every week for one dinner,” said the former Marseille coach.
“I am positive, I am ready to fight, and I believe in keeping Premier League (status). I believe in the words that I said last week. The focus is to win one game,” he added.
Rodrigo Bentancur could make his return from a three-month injury layoff against the Seagulls. However, first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains out after surgery on a hernia.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero left the field in tears following an injury in his team’s 1-0 loss to Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Argentina international limped off after colliding with Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in the second half at the Stadium of Light.
It was not immediately clear what the nature of the injury was, but the 27-year-old Romero was unable to play on and was visibly distressed as he made his way to the sideline. While he was able to leave the field unaided and did not require a stretcher, he was consoled by teammates as he walked away.

The timing of Romero’s injury will be a concern for Argentina ahead of the World Cup starting in June.
Kinsky was able to continue after having his head wrapped with a bandage.
New Spurs coach Roberto De Zerbi said it was “very bad” that Romero sustained an injury, but did not know the severity of it.
“We have to see in the next days. I hope for us it is not an important problem because he is a crucial player for us,” De Zerbi said. “We need him to finish the season and to achieve our goal.”
