MI’s Jasprit Bumrah has had a season to forget so far. The pace spearhead has taken only two wickets from eight matches at a disastrous average of 132.00- that average is the worst for any bowler who has bowled 25 plus overs this season.
And on Sunday, the misfiring Bumrah goes up against one of his lesser favourite opponents in the IPL- Chennai Super Kings.
The 32-year-old has an average record by his high standards against CSK, having taken only 15 wickets from 17 matches at an average of 33.20 and an economy rate of 7.58.
Bumrah had a decent outing with the ball when the two sides met at the Wankhede just over a week ago, returning with figures of 1/31 from his four overs in a match where CSK scored over 200.
At the Chepauk, Bumrah has played only two matches so far, but has a slightly better record, having taken two wickets at an average of 20.50 and an economy rate of 5.85.
As MI’s playoff chances hang by a thread, the pacer will need to rediscover his best form for his side’s fortunes starting with the match against CSK tonight.

Mumbai Indians’ bowlers are under scrutiny after failing to defend their highest first-innings total in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, but captain Hardik Pandya refused to single them out for blame and said the whole team was accountable.
Five-time champion Mumbai is enduring a wretched season and is ninth in the 10-team standings with just two wins from eight matches.
Its much-vaunted bowling unit, spearheaded by India paceman Jasprit Bumrah, has struggled mightily with conditions in the IPL heavily favouring batters.
Mumbai posted 243 for five against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, only for the visitor to chase it down comfortably in a six-wicket win with eight balls to spare.
Bumrah, widely regarded as the world’s premier fast bowler, went wicketless once again while conceding 54 runs in four overs. He remains stuck on two wickets in eight matches.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Pandya said there was lots of blame to go around for the defeat.
“I won’t put my bowlers under the bus. I think as an overall unit, we have not been able to do what exactly Mumbai Indians stands for,” he said.
Mumbai, which has used 22 players this season, more than any other side, just needed a slice of luck to turn things around, Pandya added.
“It’s been that kind of season. When you get a couple of chances, you grab them, that’s when luck and momentum changes,” he said.
“If you don’t, it kind of hurts you, but it’s still fine, all the boys tried really well.”

It has been quite a dismal IPL 2026 season for Jasprit Bumrah so far. The Mumbai Indians pace spearhead has not only gone wicketless in all five games, but he also conceded runs at 10.25 per over in the previous outing against Punjab Kings, raising concerns.
However, Mumbai Indians bowling coach Paras Mhambrey backed the under-fire fast bowler, calling him a ‘fighter’. “I don’t think it’s a challenging situation. Booms is a fighter. He is fighting his way through. Everything can’t be related to just the wickets,” Mhambrey said.
“He bowls at different stages of the game. Many a times, he comes in at different roles for us, in terms of finishing the Powerplays. For me, the most important bit is how he turns up for practice every session,” he added.

“At the nets yesterday, he came in with the same intensity, did the stuff that is expected out of him. I have no doubt about him. I’m sure others in the team as well – the captain, the coach and all the management – have no doubt in terms of his performance, and all that effort will translate into wickets in future games,” the bowling coach said.
In the tournament so far, Bumrah has conceded 164 runs in five matches without a wicket, an unusual stretch for a bowler of his calibre. The last time he endured a similar phase was back in 2014, when he went four matches without a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Will Jacks is yet to join the team.
