Few actors have ever been as good at being bad as Gene Hackman. The celebrated leading man, who passed away earlier this year at age 95, will be best remembered for charismatic portrayals of complicated men like the hardboiled detective “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection, the mutinous sub captain in Crimson Tide, and the perfidious patriarch in The Royal Tenebaums. In addition to being one of the most entertaining screen villains of his generation, however, Hackman was also a painter, an amateur race car driver, an avid cyclist, a published novelist, and a serious art collector. The multitudes the late actor contained are currently on preview at Bonhams, which will be auctioning off his estate later this month. Needless to say, there are some real gems up for grabs.

The Gene Hackman Collection: A Life in Art is—as the title suggests—primarily an art auction featuring an eclectic array of modern art, folk art, sculptures, and photographs, along with more than 70 of Hackman’s own works. Hidden away beneath all that, however, is a sizable trove of memorabilia, ephemera, and antiques ranging from vintage Hollywood lobby cards to Hackman’s 2003 Cecil B. DeMille award to an original treatment script for The Silence of the Lambs, which Hackman was on board to star in and direct. In the tradition of every great estate sale, there’s also a huge array of random stuff, including a vintage parking meter, a brass diving helmet, and a promo ball cap from The Runaway Jury. In short, even if you can’t snag a Kandinsky lithograph or an original Herb Ritts print, you can still score some sunglasses with unbeatable provenance.
