97% RT ‘The Boys’ Spin-off Quietly Cancelled at Prime Video, Hints Creator

When Prime Video’s subversive superhero series, The Boys, premiered in 2019, few could have predicted the franchise it would become. Fast-forward a few years, and the series has grown into a major player in the superhero arena, holding its own alongside the likes of Marvel and DC. With four seasons already available and a fifth and final season on the way, the universe has also expanded into spin-offs: the live-action Gen V and the upcoming prequel Vought Rising. While the future looks bright for the live-action branch, its animated counterpart, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, appears to have reached its end.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical premiered in 2022 as the first spin-off set within The Boys universe. It delivered eight standalone, animated stories that leaned even harder into the franchise’s signature chaos and dark satire. The series was a critical hit, earning a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience loved it too, though their reactions were slightly more mixed, as evidenced by the 71% fan-powered Popcornmeter rating. That mild indifference from the fandom reflected in the viewership traffic on Prime Video, which, according to series creator Eric Kripke, would likely not be enough to warrant Season 2.

Kripke recently sat down for a new interview, where he shared elaborate updates on what to expect from future installments. Asked about the fate of The Boys Presents: Diabolical, he seemed almost sure that the series won’t get a second season. “I don’t think there’s going to be a season 2 of ‘Diabolical,’ he said. Going on to explain the reason, he added, “It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly. Although, we love it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be game to do it, but we haven’t gotten a go-ahead on that.” That pretty much seals it. Given Amazon has been quiet about the show’s fate for over three years, Kripke’s comments might be the closest official confirmation we’ll get, but we’ll see.

Will ‘Gen V’ Get a Season 3?

The Boys fans would perhaps be more apprehensive about the fate of its college-set spin-off, Gen V, especially after that wild Season 2 finale. So to answer the above question, a Season 3 renewal depends on you, the fans. Kripke, in the same interview, noted that plans were already in place for Season 3, but added that none of them will come to fruition if the fans don’t turn up en masse to watch the show on Prime Video.

“We have a plan for ‘Gen V’ Season 3, and we’re psyched about it, but we need enough viewers to watch Season 2 to justify Season 3,” he said, adding; “Now’s the time that they’re paying attention to the numbers. So don’t watch even a year from now. Turn on Prime [Video] and watch it now. If enough people watch, then we’ll get a Season 3. Same applies to Vought Rising Season 1. We have plans for a Season 2, if we can. They’ve been nothing but supportive, and they’re giving us our opportunities. But it’s a business, and we also have to deliver. So hopefully the audience shows up.”

The Boys Presents: Diabolical and Gen V are currently streaming on Prime Video. Stay tuned for updates.
