Warning: spoilers for Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.
Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials stars Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham, and the twist in her character’s story is reminiscent of another Netflix detective series featuring her. The latest addition to Netflix’s catalog of mystery TV shows is Seven Dials, based on Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery.
Seven Dials follows Lady Bundle (Mia McKenna-Bruce), who sets out to investigate the death of Gerry Wade (Corey Mylchreest), who died after a party hosted at her family home, and to whom she was very close. Bundle’s biggest clue is a letter where Wade mentioned “Seven Dials”, but she’s not ready for the twists and revelations her investigation will lead her to.
While working parallel to Superintendent Battle (Martin Freeman), whom she keeps coming across, Bundle uncovers the truth about Gerry Wade’s death, with shocking twists that include some of the people closest to her, including her mother.
Helena Bonham Carter’s Lady Caterham Repeats Her Eudoria Holmes Twist
Helena Bonham Carter’s Lady Caterham is Bundle’s mother, and like her, is present at the party after which Gerry Wade was found dead. Lady Caterham is indifferent towards Bundle’s investigation of Wade’s death, but a twist near the end of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials brings her to the front and center.
Lady Caterham is revealed to be the mind behind the stealing of Dr. Matip’s formula and thus is the employer of Jimmy Thesiger and Gerry Wade’s sister, Loraine. Lady Caterham’s goal was to steal Dr. Matip’s formula and sell it abroad, thus betraying her country, and Gerry Wade was killed by Loriane because he knew too much.
Lady Caterham explained to Bundle that her country had betrayed her with the deaths of her husband and her son, the latter killed during the war. Despite asking Bundle to let her go before the police arrived, Bundle stopped her, and she was arrested. This, however, is similar to a twist in Enola Holmes.
In it, Bonham Carter plays Eudoria Holmes, mother of Mycroft, Sherlock, and Enola. Eudoria suddenly disappears, which is the event that leads to Enola becoming a detective, and it’s revealed that not only did Eudoria willingly leave her daughter, but she’s also part of a radical group of suffragettes, and she’s not planning on returning home.
While Eudoria’s plans are less destructive than Lady Caterham’s, both Helena Bonham Carter characters went from being the mothers of amateur detectives to being a big part of the problem their daughters were investigating.
Could Lady Caterham Return After Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials?
While Eudoria still randomly appears in the Enola Holmes movies, the fate of Lady Caterham remains unclear. At the end of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, Lady Caterham is arrested, along with Jimmy and Loraine, while Bundle is offered a spot in the Seven Dials organization by Battle, who leads the group.
If there are more seasons of Seven Dials, Lady Caterham could become a recurrent villain, which would be interesting to watch, as that would add some extra conflict to Bundle now that she’s part of the Seven Dials group. It’s to be seen what’s next for Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, but for now, Helena Bonham Carter’s Lady Caterham and Eudoria Holmes have some interesting similarities.
