Gold favorite Lindsey Vonn crashes hard in final downhill before Winter Olympics

Wearing the red jersey as the overall standings leader in the women’s downhill competition this winter, Lindsey Vonn was unable to finish the last race before the Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old crashed around 20 seconds into her run on the Crans-Montana course in Switzerland.

Vonn was the third starter out of the first six to crash out of the competition. After she went down, the race was suspended.

The American star, who is looking for her second Olympic gold in next month’s event in Italy, suffered injuries to her left leg and knee, her coach, former downhill racer Aksel Lund Svindal, told reporters after the race.

The severity of the injuries will have to be determined in follow-up examination by medical experts, Svindal added. He also said that remains positive, despite Vonn being in “a bit of pain.”

Vonn’s crash occurred in a right-hand corner following a jump. She lost some her balance and slid out into the safety netting, having to be freed by race personnel.

She eventually was able to ride to the finish area under her own power. The crash nonetheless casts a cloud over her appearance in the Olympic downhill competition set to take place on Feb. 8 in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

One of the most successful alpine skiers of all time, Vonn originally retired in 2020. However, she made a comeback in 2024 and slowly reclaimed her former spot among the world’s elite. This season so far, she became the oldest downhill World Cup winner and entered Friday having beaten the field in two of the first five races of the year.

Lukas Dostal made 22 saves while leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday in Las Vegas, evening their best-of-seven Western Conference second-round playoff series at one win each.

The decision continues a recent trend of Kentucky Derby winners skipping the Preakness. Golden Tempo is now the fourth Kentucky Derby winning horse to skip the Preakness joining Mandaloun (2021), Rich Strike (2022) and Sovereignty last year.

And the decision is the latest bit of evidence that the schedule needs to be changed.

For years, trainers and analysts alike have argued that the two-week turnaround between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness was simply too short for the horses. After Sovereignty’s win a year ago Michael Banahan, a member of the ownership team, said this:

“He ran really hard today. And especially when you get a closer from off the pace like that, they have to lay their body on the line a little bit. If he responds well, maybe we look at that, you know? But I don’t want to jump in straightaway. We’ll enjoy today. Today was the goal.”

And trainer Bill Mott laid the groundwork as well, saying this after Sovereignity won the Kentucky Derby: “We want to do what’s best for the horse,” Mott told reporters. “Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and that’s not something we’re not going to think about.”

After skipping the Preakness, Sovereignty went on to win the Belmont Stakes. Even with a potential Triple Crown off the table, Mott stood by the decision.
