After it was revealed that the Halo television series and the Maze Runner trilogy are leaving Netflix in various regions, another sci-fi film is set to bid farewell to the platform. The film is nearly a decade old, and was intended to start a franchise. But its box office underperformance put an end to those plans. The film in question hasn’t exactly found its audience on home video either, despite receiving mostly positive reviews from fans over the years. It garnered decent reviews from critics as well, even if it wasn’t outright acclaimed. Featuring a cast full of newcomers and veterans alike, Power Rangers served as a long-awaited big-budget theatrical adaptation of the television series of the same name.
It was released in 2017 and directed by Dean Israelite, the filmmaker who broke out with Project Almanac some years prior. Power Rangers featured Dacre Montgomery, R.J. Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G, and Ludi Lin in the lead roles, with Bryan Cranston starring as Zordon, the Power Rangers’ mentor. The villain, Rita Repulsa, was played by Elizabeth Banks, while Bill Hader provided the voice for Zordon’s robot assistant. Power Rangers was written by Jon Gatins, based on a story co-conceived by Matt Shazama and Burk Sharpless, who’ve taken many brickbats over the years for their uninspired output. Some of the films they’ve worked on include Gods of Egypt, Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Morbius, and Madame Web.
Here’s How Much Longer You Have to Watch ‘Power Rangers’
Power Rangers holds a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than any of those films. It’s currently sitting at 51% on the aggregator website, where the critics’ consensus reads: “Power Rangers has neither the campy fun of its TV predecessor nor the blockbuster action of its cinematic superhero competitors, and sadly never quite manages to shift into turbo for some good old-fashioned morphin time.” Produced on a reported budget of more than $100 million, the film grossed just around $140 million at the worldwide box office. Of all the cast members, Scott seemingly did the best; she played Princess Jasmine in the live-action Aladdin remake, worked with Banks on the Charlie’s Angels reboot, and more recently, headlined Smile 2.
You can watch Power Rangers on Netflix in the United States until March 6. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
