Barrington Hargress scored 23 points and Sebastian Rancik had 17 as Colorado defeated Arizona State 78-70 in a Big 12 game Saturday in Boulder, Col.

The Buffaloes (14-10, 4-7 Big 12) shot 50.8% from the field (31 of 61) as they outscored the Sun Devils (12-12, 3-8) 42-26 in the paint.

Isaiah Johnson also had 16 for Colorado.

Arizona State was led by Maurice Odum with 23 points and Massamba Diop’s 19 and team-high seven rebounds.

After squandering its seven-point halftime lead and battling back and forth, the Buffaloes reclaimed control with a 7-0 run that gave them a 64-56 lead with 8:48 left.

The Sun Devils were able to cut the deficit to two with a 6-0 run over the ensuing two minutes with Diop finishing a pair of dunks.

Bangot Dak, however, hit a short jumper and Rancik nailed a 3-pointer to give Colorado a seven-point lead with 5:28 left which was never cut to less than three the rest of the way.

The Buffaloes built a 12-point first-half lead by shooting 46.9% from the floor (15 of 32), while the Sun Devils struggled from the floor hitting only 32.3% (10 of 31) of their shots in the first 20 minutes.

The Buffaloes led by 10 midway through the first half after the Sun Devils went over five minutes with a made basket.

Rancik had five points during the stretch with two free throws and a 3-pointer.

Dak finished the run with a rousing dunk down the lane with 7:27 left in the half to make it 26-16 Colorado.

Colorado took a 32-21 lead on back-to-back layups by Dak and Hargress with 5:23 left in the half.

Anthony Johnson scored two of the Sun Devils’ 18 second-chance points on a tip-in with 3:30 left to make it 34-27.

Hargress responded with a jumper and Rancik hit a 3-pointer to give Colorado a 39-27 lead with 1:57 to go.

The Sun Devils were able to get back within single digits in the final two minutes when Odum hit two free throws and Johnson scored on a layup with 33 seconds left to make it 39-31 at the break.

Both the Indians produced some stunning performances against top players such as Li Shi Feng and Jonatan Christie.

After missing action due to a shoulder injury, Satwik and his partner Chirag will be back with a fresh mind and body as India face Pan American champion Canada, Oceania champion Australia, and 11-time winner and defending champion China in Group A.

“We will have a good chance to win the Thomas Cup again. With Ayush and Lakshya in singles and Satwik and Chirag in doubles, of course, everything will have to click,” former India coach Vimal Kumar said.

“India and China should pull through from the group.”

The onus will mainly be on the young guns to take India through, as Srikanth and Prannoy are not in the best of form.

While Srikanth had two runner-up finishes last year, he has struggled in the BWF World Tour events. Prannoy too has been bogged down by niggles and endured a forgettable season since the 2024 Olympics, when he battled through chikungunya.

While India will rely on their experience, Kiran George might be called into service for the third singles. Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun will shoulder the second doubles responsibility.

India should reach the quarterfinals first, though it is likely to face resistance from world championships bronze medallist Viktor Lai of Canada, which also has a good player in Brian Yang.

In fact, China no longer has that invincible aura of the past, and on its day, Indian shuttlers are capable of taming them, as Ayush and Lakshya have shown in the recent past.

In the knockout stage, India has the wherewithal to take on any team, and there will be no dearth of motivation and team camaraderie as the core remains the same.

Tough road ahead for women

In the Uber Cup, the Indian women’s team, led by double Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu, will face Denmark on Friday (April 24), Ukraine on Saturday (April 25), and China on Monday (April 27).

India has won bronze medals in the 2014 and 2016 editions, but it will be an uphill battle this time, especially without the services of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, who is nursing an ankle injury.

The women’s team is clubbed with European Team Championships runner-up Denmark, bronze medallist Ukraine, and 16-time champion China.

India has a young core, with world junior championships bronze medallist Tanvi Sharma, Thailand Open Super 300 winner Devika Sihag, Unnati Hooda, winner of three Super 100 titles and two International Challenge titles, and Isharani Baruah sharing responsibility for the second and third singles.

In Treesa-Gayatri’s absence, the pair of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will handle the second doubles, while Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi are likely to play the first doubles, with the experience of Tanisha Crasto also coming into play.

A lot will depend on Sindhu as she plays the first singles, but she has struggled to maintain consistency in recent times, with a Malaysia Open semifinal her best show this season.

Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer compared the Ekana pitch to the famed Perth track of yesteryears, admitting that the home team has been unable to adapt to the pace and bounce on offer on it.

The LSG has struggled on its home surface, losing all three matches here. It has gone down by six and seven wickets to Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans respectively, before suffering a 40-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.

The LSG lost six of its eight matches here last season, including five in a row. Overall, it has managed just nine wins from 25 games at the venue.

“The pitch here is very different than in most of India. It’s a brilliant cricket pitch. You see pace and bounce, and we just haven’t quite adjusted to it,” Langer said at the post-match press conference.

“I thought we’d started off, we’d been bowling quite well in it. We bowled well in the first game, but we’re just not adjusting to the extra pace and bounce. We saw that we’ve been out to the short ball a number of times, our batters.

“We see a lot of the wickets in India where the ball doesn’t bounce very high. This is like playing at the WACA. There’s real pace and bounce.You’re seeing some really interesting cricket being played here,” he added.

Despite boasting a formidable batting line-up featuring skipper Rishabh Pant, Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, South Africa T20 captain Aiden Markram and the flamboyant Nicholas Pooran, LSG has struggled to put up competitive totals at home, managing 141, 164 for 8 and 119 in three games.

“Our batting’s just not quite clicking, and who would have thought at the start of the season our batting wouldn’t click with the calibre of players we’ve got? We could never have read that, so we’re working hard on it.” The former Australia coach, however, had words of praise for the bowling unit, predicting a bright future for young pacers Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan.

“Last year our numbers were incredible and we were ruing the fact that a lot of our bowlers were injured or coming back from injury or not quite fit.

“This year our bowlers have been a real credit. I think Mohsin Khan, again outstanding. Prince Yadav, I think they’re both two players who will play for India. No question in my mind they’ll both play for India.” On whether the franchise had any say in pitch preparation, Langer dismissed the notion.

“No, no, no. Their groundsmen here: I’ve said for the last couple of years this is one of the best pitches in India.” “It’s a big ground. It’s a brilliant bat… it’s a great cricket wicket actually and we just need to adapt to it better.” Meanwhile, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who struck an unbeaten 43 and picked up a wicket to guide Rajasthan to victory, said the surface was far from an ideal T20 wicket.

“The wicket wasn’t very easy.There was grass, it was a red-soil wicket, so there was bounce as well. Their four fast bowlers were making it swing and seam alongside good pace.

“I wouldn’t say it was ideally a T20 wicket, you couldn’t just go and swing at it and get runs. Fast bowlers from both teams would have enjoyed that they could bounce and seam it,” Jadeja said.

However, the seasoned all-rounder appreciated the consistency of the pitch across both the innings.

“What I liked was that the wicket was equal for both. It’s not like how it is sometimes, when batters first get a slow, seaming wicket and then nothing happens in the second innings. Both teams lost two-three wickets in the Powerplay itself.

“It was a challenging T20 match, not the typical one with fireworks from both sides. It challenges you mentally, and skill-wise you have to be sharp,” he said.
