One of Nike’s ahead-of-its-time 2000s-era basketball sneakers is coming back for its 25th anniversary including the first-ever release of an original player-exclusive colorway.
Years before the synthetics of Nike’s Hyperdunk and Hyperfuse models changed the brand’s approach to lightweight footwear design, it was already making a push to shed weight and make its hoops shoes lighter, sleeker and quicker. In 2001, that materialized in the form of the Zoom Hyperflight, a glossy, nearly seamless design which was part of Nike’s experimental Alpha Project series.
Most memorably worn by former Sacramento Kings standout Jason Williams, the Zoom Hyperflight was intended for speedy players. It was designed by Eric Avar, the same designer who produced Nike’s futuristic Air Foamposite One and years later, would design many of Kobe Bryant’s most influential models.

Fittingly, the Zoom Hyperflight will return first in Williams’ player edition style. The Varsity Purple/White/Black colorway of the sneaker features a purple patent leather upper with black accents and personalized “J Will” text at the heel as well as Williams’ jersey number, 55, on the tongue. Beyond the purple pair, Nike is set to release numerous other Zoom Hyperflights throughout the year.
And to sweeten the deal even more, it’s been confirmed that Nike has officially signed a new deal with Williams. According to industry insider Nick DePaula, Williams is set to be the face of the Hyperflight’s 25th anniversary revival and will host a launch event for the style during Nike’s Snkrs Cafeteria located at Crenshaw High School for NBA All-Star Weekend.
Those who aren’t able to make it to Los Angeles for the early launch will have a chance to purchase the Nike Zoom Hyperflight Jason Williams PE later this year. The sneaker retails for $170 and its style code is IV5768-500.
