Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night! Can you imagine how many times Lorne Michaels has heard those words? Maybe he’ll tell us when the legendary Saturday Night Live creator’s documentary from Focus Features debuts on April 17. That’s right, folks! Michaels is letting Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor) behind the scenes to create an in-depth look at the man behind the curtain of an entertainment institution.
Where else do we know Lorne Michaels from?
The Lorne Michaels documentary marks another collaboration between the SNL creator and Morgan Neville, after Neville executive-produced last year’s SNL: 50: Beyond Saturday Night, a Peacock series about the decades-old sketch comedy show. Michaels’ talents and contributions to the entertainment industry extend beyond Saturday Night Live, as he’s also the producer of The Tonight Show, Wayne’s World, Mean Girls, and The Three Amigos!, which he co-wrote with Steve Martin and Randy Newman. Additionally, Michaels produced The Kids in the Hall, the beloved Canadian sketch show that, in my opinion, is infinitely better than Saturday Night Live.
Who’s contributing to the new documentary?
The upcoming Lorne Michaels documentary includes archival footage and interviews with the show’s cast members and writers, including Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Andy Samberg, Conan O’Brien, and Chris Rock.
My favorite SNL era
Where do you stand on the current state of Saturday Night Live? I think it’s one of those things that the best cast (or era) is the one you grew up with, so, in my mind, SNL peaked with Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, David Spade, Kevin Nealon, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Jon Lovitz, and Norm Macdonald. Then again, I’ve seen a handful of chuckle-worthy sketches throughout the years, but nothing that comes close to the golden days of the ’90s.
Don’t take my word for it, though. I’m just an old man yelling at clouds. Plus, I admire Michaels’ storied career. His eye for comedy and talent is something to stand up and applaud. He’s helped shape the comedic landscape for decades, and many SNL cast members have gone on to become some of Hollywood’s greatest entertainers. His legacy is incredible, and I’m genuinely interested to see how Neville encapsulates his enigmatic career.
