“They need innocent people to incriminate themselves, in order to justify their actions… They fear being unmasked.” Janus Films has unveiled the official US trailer for the indie film titled Two Prosecutors, the latest work from the Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (also director of My Joy, In the Fog, A Gentle Creature, Donbass). This premiered at last year’s 2025 Cannes Film Festival and it also played at Karlovy Vary, Toronto, New York, London, and many other major fests worldwide. Set in the USSR back in 1937, a newly appointed prosecutor discovers an undestroyed letter from a prisoner that reveals corruption in the secret police, the NKVD. His search for the truth becomes dangerous. The new film from great Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa is a scalpel-precise tale of the horrors of totalitarian bureaucracy. With Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Aleksandr Filippenko, Anatoliy Beliy, Andris KeiÅ¡s, Vytautas KaniuÅ¡onis, Valentin Novopolskij. The film is described in many positive reviews as “a Kafkaesque tale that is laced with bitter irony, exploring ideas of justice and legacy.” This one is for die-hard cinephiles and fans of Loznitsa already.
Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Sergei Loznitsa’s film Two Prosecutors, from YouTube:

Adapting a novel by Soviet writer and political prisoner Georgy Demidov, set in the Soviet Union in 1937, Loznitsa follows the attempts of an idealistic government-appointed prosecutor (Alexander Kuznetsov) to expose the mistreatment of a dissident Bolshevik writer who has been jailed and tortured without evidence of wrongdoing. As he gradually comes to realize, the lack of cause for the man’s imprisonment is hardly unique under Stalin’s regime, and the neophyte lawyer may be putting himself in danger by exposing his own moral righteousness. Loznitsa constructs his story with a patient yet unmistakable sense of mounting dread, focusing on the devastating minutiae that allows fascism to function. Two Prosecutors, also known as Zwei Staatsanwälte in German, is written and directed by the acclaimed Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa, director of the films My Joy, In the Fog, A Gentle Creature, Donbass, and the doc Babi Yar. Context plus plenty of other doc films previously. Adapted from the novel by Georgy Demidov. Produced by Kevin Chneiweiss. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival last year. Janus Films debuts Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors film in select US theaters starting March 30th, 2026 coming soon. Intrigued?
