Warner Bros. had a killer year at the box office in 2025, with Ryan Coogler‘s Oscar contender Sinners, James Gunn‘s Superman, and Zach Cregger‘s horror epic Weapons among its biggest success stories. However, none can quite compare to the global dominance of A Minecraft Movie. Though the critical reception wasn’t great, audiences turned out to finally see one of the bestselling games of all time brought to life in all its blocky glory, resulting in a staggering haul of over $961 million worldwide. It generally had everything expected from Mojang’s beloved game, like its signature building and crafting elements and iconic mobs, along with a top-notch cast headlined by Jack Black to boot. There was still one notable absence that producer Roy Lee teased would be remedied with the sequel, though.
In a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub for the upcoming serial killer thriller Psycho Killer, Lee was asked about the status of A Minecraft Movie 2 after it was greenlit last year. The success of the first film, directed by Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess, spurred Warner Bros. to fast-track the sequel for 2027, a tall task given how long it took to get the game to screens at all. With the date not all that far off, Lee confirmed that everything is moving apace and the cast will be whisked back through the portal to the Overworld in just a few short months. “The status of that is it’s going forward,” he shared. “It starts production in April of this year in New Zealand.”
While the process of A Minecraft Movie 2 is very much “second verse, same as the first,” there’s a conscious effort to include some audience feedback and address what viewers wanted to see. The first film took its four misfits, played by Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks, on a journey through the Overworld that not only allows them to embrace their imagination but also thrusts them into an unexpected battle against the forces of the Nether with help from the master crafter Steve (Black). With Malgosha and her army of Piglins defeated, and the party returned to the real world, the next move was obvious to fans of the game — bring in the game’s final boss, the Ender Dragon. “A lot of people said, ‘Yeah, just make that movie, but make sure the Ender Dragon is in it,'” Lee teased. “I think that’s what a lot of the requests have been.”
What Else Can Be Expected From ‘Minecraft 2’?
Like the massive, creative reality of Minecraft itself, the sequel film is operating with the idea that there are always new worlds and ideas to explore. Lee’s Ender Dragon tease indicates that the party’s next adventure will take them down into an ancient stronghold, where they can find a portal to the mysterious End, where the lanky, frightening Endermen live alongside the all-powerful Ender Dragon. How they’ll get there remains to be seen, but they’ll likely be joined by a new companion in Alex, the other playable character from the games. A post-credits tease saw Steve meeting his ginger-haired fellow builder, all but confirming that she’ll be integral to whatever his future holds. Hess and Chris Galletta have kept their story ideas under lock and key while working on the sequel.
In the meantime, Lee is focused on the release of Psycho Killer, which has undergone its own lengthy journey to the screen. The script from Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker has been around since the late 2000s, though it was only after New Regency greenlit the project under first-time feature director Gavin Polone in 2023 that the rubber finally met the road. Starring Barbarian‘s Georgina Campbell, the story centers on a highway patrol officer who begins pursuing a serial killer after her husband became one of his victims. However, nothing can prepare her for the full depth of the murderer’s depravity as she unravels more about his sinister agenda and mentality when it comes to his gruesome killings.
Psycho Killer premieres in theaters this Friday, February 20. A Minecraft Movie 2, meanwhile, is due to arrive on July 23, 2027. Stay tuned here at Collider until then for further updates on the much-anticipated blocky sequel.
