The Winter Olympics this year had a strong start, sartorially speaking and otherwise. Opening ceremony headliner Mariah Carey stunned in a glittering Roberto Cavalli gown; a group of models wearing Giorgio Armani suits formed the tri-colored Italian flag; other performers generated buzz by dressing themselves head to toe as vivid Bialetti Moka espresso makers, a beloved Italian invention; and Team USA joined the Parade of Nations in custom-designed looks by Ralph Lauren.

Throughout the weeks, fashion rode shotgun with world-class athleticism. This was evident in everything from the Oscar de la Renta costumes seen on ice skater Deanna Stellato-Dudek to the official, sumptuous garb of Team Mongolia (sourced from Goyol Cashmere and something that led to the widespread sentiment that Mongolia was the best-dressed country). So too were Liu’s grunge-inspired ensembles — all leopard tights and halo hair and a frenulum piercing for good measure — a sight to behold, completed by Snoop Dogg‘s myriad of headline-generating ‘fits, shown off during his time as Team USA’s first honorary coach in history. The man, sometimes matching with BFF Martha Stewart, turned to fur hats; houndstooth coats; and red-white-and-blue puffers pasted with the faces of American athletes competing at any given time — all while protecting his feet by way of brands like Columbia and Salomon.

Those questioning just how pivotal branded fashion placements are during the Olympics need only to remember what happened to boxer Jake Paul’s fiancée Jutta Leerdam, a Dutch speed skater who got gold in the women’s 1000m by finishing in record-breaking time. She unzipped her racing suit after securing the medal, only to reveal a white Nike sports bra — the Indy High Support Women’s Padded Front-Zip Sports Bra, to be exact, which fans rushed to grab in Leerdam’s exact color at Kohl’s. Experts said this move, strategic or not, could’ve earned her a $1 million payout from Nike; others, however, accused the 27-year-old of “ambush marketing.” Though there were speculations of it, she will not be punished by the International Olympic Committee.
