Young Sherlock is set to debut all eight episodes of its first season on Prime Video this week. Ahead of that, reviews for the show put it in rarified air.
What are Young Sherlock reviews saying?
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Young Sherlock has debuted with a perfect 100% rating. Although this is just for eight critics, the series has gotten a ton of praise, enough so that the show has lifted itself up above the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films, all of which were also viewed highly.
Collider’s Therese Lacson praised the show, even though it skews far from more adaptive work. “What Young Sherlock lacks in accuracy to the source material, it makes up for in pure entertainment,” wrote Lacson. Screen Rant’s Ben Gibbons echoed that, calling it “an incredibly clever and imaginative retelling of a classic story that manages to preserve the best aspects of the source material, while also boldly breaking new ground and redefining the characters involved.”
ComicBook’s Simon Gallagher said the show felt like “an exciting new addition to a very familiar universe, unconcerned about making a pure adaptation, but faithful enough that the bolt-ons are very welcome.” Variety’s Aramide Tinubu, likewise, said the show “is a compelling origin story that brings a classic character to life. This time, though, he is spry and bold enough for our fast-paced 21st-century world.”
“When a charismatic, youthfully defiant Sherlock Holmes meets none other than James Moriarty, he finds himself dragged into a murder investigation that threatens his liberty. Sherlock’s first ever case unravels a globe-trotting conspiracy, leading to an explosive showdown that alters the course of his life forever,” reads the show’s official synopsis. “Unfolding in a vibrant Victorian England and adventuring abroad, the series will expose the early antics of the anarchic adolescent who is yet to evolve into Baker Street’s most renowned resident.”
The series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, and also stars Zine Tseng, Dónal Finn, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Colin Firth, Max Irons, and more.
