Pixar Animation Studios has officially returned to its former glory with the release of “Hoppers,” a film that critics are hailing as a masterpiece. This science fiction comedy marks a significant turning point for the studio, achieving the highest critical scores seen in nearly ten years. Audiences are flocking to theaters to experience this inventive and emotionally resonant story, as anticipated.

The film’s meteoric rise highlights a renewed focus on risk-taking and thematic depth. These elements originally defined the studio’s golden era. By blending absurdist humor with a poignant environmental message, Hoppers serves as a definitive reminder of Pixar’s potential. When the studio prioritizes original visions over safe bets, the results are nothing short of groundbreaking and magical.

A New Era for Pixar Animation

For many critics, the reception of “Hoppers” marks the beginning of what some are already calling a “Pixar Renaissance.” Directed by Daniel Chong, best known as the creator of “We Bare Bears,” the film represents the 30th feature-length release from Pixar Animation Studios. This milestone arrives at a crucial time for the studio. 

In recent years, Pixar has faced criticism for leaning heavily on sequels and high-concept projects that struggled to connect with audiences. “Elio,” for instance, had an underwhelming performance in 2025, the lowest opening weekend in Pixar history. 

 By contrast, “Hoppers” has struck an immediate chord with both critics and viewers. The film currently holds a remarkable 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes; a rating that rivals beloved Pixar classics such as “Inside Out” and “Coco.” Notably, Pixar has not seen this level of acclaim for an original project since “Inside Out” premiered in 2015.

Consequently, industry analysts are now watching closely. If “Hoppers” performs as strongly at the box office as it has with critics, it could reshape Pixar’s strategy for future films. 

Critical Highlights

Much of the praise centers on the film’s fearless storytelling. Writing for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman famously described the movie as “Bambi on crack,” emphasizing its wild imagination and surreal comedic energy. Similarly, Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict applauded the film’s refusal to follow familiar animated-film formulas. In particular, he highlighted the absence of predictable tropes, such as the standard third-act betrayal that often appears in family animation.

In other reviews, they focused on the emotional balance of the “Hoppers” story. While “Hoppers” explores weighty themes about environmental responsibility and empathy, critics note that the narrative never becomes overwhelming. Instead, the film manages to remain accessible and entertaining for younger viewers.

Taken together, these reactions suggest Pixar may have recalibrated its storytelling ambitions. The studio’s creative instincts, it seems, are once again guiding its direction.

The Plot: A “Girl-Turns-Beaver” Adventure

At its core, “Hoppers” tells a delightfully strange yet surprisingly heartfelt story. The film follows Mabel Tanaka, a 19-year-old animal enthusiast voiced by Piper Curda. Through experimental “hopping” technology developed by her eccentric biology professor, Dr. Sam (voiced by Kathy Najimy), Mabel transfers her consciousness into a robotic beaver.

Initially, the experiment allows her to observe wildlife from a completely new perspective. However, curiosity soon turns into something far bigger. While living among the animals, Mabel uncovers a conspiracy threatening the surrounding habitat. Soon, she finds herself leading an unlikely animal uprising against human encroachment. This “modern ecological adventure” has been described by Pixar CCO Pete Docter as a mix of “Avatar,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Planet Earth.”

An Ensemble of Voice Talent

Another major strength of the film is its diverse and energetic voice cast. Alongside Piper Curda’s performance as Mabel, several well-known actors bring the movie’s eccentric animal world to life.

Among them is Mayor Jerry Generazzo (Jon Hamm), the film’s antagonist whose development plans threaten the forest habitat; King George (Bobby Moynihan), a charismatic and slightly theatrical beaver monarch who becomes Mabel’s most loyal ally; Insect Queen (Meryl Streep), the respected leader of the Animal Council; Ellen (Melissa Villaseñor), a perpetually grumpy bear whose constant hunger for beavers creates an ongoing source of tension and comedy throughout the film. 

Critics have specifically praised the chemistry between these characters as one of the film’s greatest strengths. Even the most bizarre situations, such as a robotic beaver leading an animal rebellion, feel emotionally grounded thanks to the performances. 

Creative and Technical Achievements

Visually, “Hoppers” represents a notable shift in Pixar’s traditional style. Rather than leaning entirely on hyper-realistic animation, the studio experimented with a more cinematic look. Warm, autumn-inspired color palettes dominate the film, creating a distinctive atmosphere.

This stylistic evolution reflects director Daniel Chong’s creative philosophy. After building a successful career in television, Chong began developing “Hoppers” in late 2020 with a clear goal: combine fast-paced, zany comedy with the emotional storytelling that defines classic Pixar films.

Working alongside screenwriter Jesse Andrews and producer Nicole Paradis Grindle, Chong remained committed to the film’s environmental themes. Although some industry voices encouraged the team to soften the messaging, the filmmakers ultimately chose to preserve the story’s ecological focus. That decision appears to have paid off. 

Interestingly, the film’s ecological elements were informed by real-world science. Pixar consulted researchers studying beavers and their environmental impact, highlighting the species’ role as a “keystone ecosystem engineer” that shapes entire habitats through dam building. This blend of factual inspiration and animated storytelling helps ground the film’s fantastical premise in genuine environmental awareness.

Box Office Projections and Future Outlook 

With its wide theatrical release scheduled for March 6, 2026, “Hoppers” is already positioned as a potentially significant box-office performer. Early projections suggest the film could open with $35–$40 million in North America, a strong start for an original animated property in today’s theatrical landscape.

For Pixar and its parent company The Walt Disney Company, that success would represent a significant victory. In recent years, the animation industry has struggled with audiences who have grown accustomed to watching family films at home rather than in theaters. 

However, the strong critical response to Hoppers suggests that originality still matters. When Pixar embraces imaginative storytelling and emotional authenticity, audiences remain eager to return to the theater.

Given its near-universal praise, the film is already being discussed as a potential contender in the Best Animated Feature category at the next Academy Awards. Whether or not it ultimately takes home the trophy, “Hoppers” has already accomplished something significant. It has reminded audiences, and perhaps Pixar itself, of the studio’s extraordinary creative potential.
