Ever since its debut on HBO Max in late November, Heated Rivalry has staged a lightning-fast takeover of American cultural mindshare, catapulting stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie into the spotlight. It has also given the actors a platform to show off a heated rivalry of a different sort in their escalating battle for wristwear supremacy.
There was the diamond-studded Serpenti that Hudson Williams wore to the Golden Globes. (Hopefully more stylish dudes will follow his lead—after all, if a man will confidently wear a teeny tiny Cartier, he can certainly pull off a watch shaped like a snake.) Then there was the IWC Portofino Complete Calendar that Connor Storrie wore on Seth Meyers back in January. At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before Williams one-ups him with a Grand Complication.

Before he can do that, however, Connor Storrie managed to get a few more points on the board by wearing the criminally underrated Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades for his SNL opening monologue last weekend. Though it often plays second fiddle to the 007-approved Seamaster 300 or the NASA-approved Speedmaster, its versatility, excellent sizing, and incredible variety of configurations, metals, and dial colors make it an ideal entry point into the luxury watch-o-sphere. While you can buy one in Sedna Gold for $42,200, you can also pick one up (as Storrie did) in stainless steel with a saffron dial for a relatively reasonable $7,400. In this respect, the Shades is much like Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual: an excellent everyday option with plenty of water resistance, a great movement, and no frills.
Storrie’s particular watch is tough to argue with: 38mm is a perfect size for both men and women; the automatic OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 8800 is certified by METAS (IYKYK); 150m of water resistance is more than enough for virtually any situation; and the saffron-colored dial is undeniably beautiful. Your move, Hudson.
