Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images Carson Hocevar recorded his first NASCAR Cup Series win Sunday, pulling away from Chris Buescher off the final turn in a three-lap shootout to win the wreck-ridden Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala.
The high-speed, 188-lap drafting race was interrupted by a chaotic accident on Lap 115 in Stage 2 that eliminated many competitors, but the two drivers ran side-by-side until Erik Jones, running fourth, wrecked with seven laps left.
Hocevar’s No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet beat Buescher’s No. 17 Ford by 0.114 seconds for his first Cup win in his 91st start, becoming the 13th driver to notch his first-ever victory at the Alabama track.
As cars wrecked coming to the final flag, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott and Zane Smith finished third through fifth.
In typical Talladega fashion, the 2.66-mile superspeedway produced several different leaders moving back and forth, including Chad Finchum, making his second start in 2026, coming from the back in his No. 66 Ford along with Cody Ware and leading his first NASCAR laps as the race became 10 circuits old.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ty Gibbs led after the field pitted in three different large groups — a wild session full of mistakes, which featured JGR teammates Denny Hamlin cited for speeding and Chase Briscoe for a safety violation as he roared the pits.
After the varying pit strategies and infractions played out in Stage 1, Ryan Preece’s No. 60 took the checkers for the top points as RFK Racing led the charge. Teammates Brad Keselowski and Buescher were second and fourth, respectively, while Joey Logano was third, Ryan Blaney fifth and Josh Berry sixth — all in Fords.
The Big One, Talladega’s massive crash, occurred on Lap 115 in Stage 2 as the front of the pack got together when second-place Ross Chastain turned leader Bubba Wallace to start the season’s biggest track mayhem by far.
While the front four cars of Chastain, Preece, Buescher and Christopher Bell all drove away unscathed as bedlam unfolded behind them, 26 cars were sent spinning and sliding in a wreck that forced a red-flag condition of nearly 10 minutes.
In hard two-wide racing to end Stage 2, Chastain held off Bell while Buescher, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Todd Gilliland rounded out the first five under the checkers.

Both will be eligible to play when the series resumes on Monday with Game 5 in Denver.
The incident was evidently sparked when Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels took an uncontested layup with 2.1 seconds left and the Timberwolves already leading by 14 — a play the Nuggets took exception to, given how the game had been decided.
Jokic, the NBA said, “initiated the incident by confronting and shoving” McDaniels in reaction to that play. Randle, the league said, “escalated the incident by forcefully inserting himself into the scrum and shoving Nuggets guard-forward Bruce Brown.”

Jokic and Randle were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.
“He scored when we’d stopped playing. You guys saw what happened,” Jokic said.

Minnesota leads the series 3-1, but will be without guard Donte DiVincenzo for the rest of the season because of a torn Achilles and will be without fellow guard Anthony Edwards indefinitely because of a knee injury.
DiVincenzo and Edwards both got hurt on Saturday.

The D-Backs trailed 6-0 after Manny Machado’s second homer, a three-run shot in the fifth, before scoring 10 runs in their final two bat-bats while batting around in the seventh and eighth.
Tim Tawa triggered a six-run seventh with his first career grand slam, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. capped it with a two-run single to give the D-Backs their first lead, 8-7
Vargas had a bases-loaded triple to ignite a four-run eighth inning and scored on a Ketel Marte single to close the scoring.
Vargas’ homer in the sixth extended his season-opening hitting streak to 20 games, and he doubled and scored in the seventh. He has the longest active hitting streak in the majors and is tied with Pablo Sandoval for the longest in the majors since 2012. He has a 23-game hitting streak dating to 2025.
Jose Fernandez had three hits including a homer and Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Nolan Arenado had two hits apiece for the D-Backs, who had lost four of five. They were the designated home team.
Luis Campusano doubled and homered and Jackson Merrill had two hits for the Padres, who had won 13 of 15.
Machado’s two-run homer off Ryne Nelson in the third gave the Padres a 3-0 lead following Campusano’s RBI double in the second,. Campusano went deep in the sixth gave San Diego a 7-2 lead.
Padres starter Michael King gave up three hits and two runs in six innings, with eight strikeouts and one walk. He fanned seven of the first nine batters he faced.

Ryan Thompson (2-0) gave up two hits in the seventh.
Nelson allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. He has given up 14 runs in his last two starts over 5 1/3 innings.
