Tyler Rake is preparing for another high-stakes mission as Netflix moves forward with plans for the highly anticipated Extraction 3. Following the blockbuster success of the first two films, fans have been eagerly waiting for confirmation that Chris Hemsworth’s battle-hardened mercenary would return to the screen. Now, new production updates are finally offering a clearer timeline.

According to industry insiders, principal photography for Extraction 3 is scheduled to begin in June 2026. The timeline aligns with recent comments from director Sam Hargrave, who revealed that the creative team is currently deep in the “story-cracking” phase of development. While fans wait for cameras to roll, the broader Extraction universe continues to expand, with spin-offs already in development as Netflix builds one of its most successful action franchises.

The Path to Extraction 3

If it feels like fans have been holding their breath since Tyler Rake miraculously survived both a deadly bridge fall and a brutal Georgian prison break, that’s because the road to Extraction 3 has been anything but straightforward. Although the sequel was officially announced during Netflix’s TUDUM event in 2023, progress has been slowed by the realities of Hollywood scheduling.

Understanding why Netflix is willing to wait for Hemsworth requires only a glance at the numbers. The original Extraction, released in 2020, quickly became a pandemic-era phenomenon. The film accumulated 135.7 million views, making it the most-watched Netflix original film at the time. More importantly, it reshaped expectations for streaming action movies. Rather than relying on PG-13 superhero spectacle, the film proved audiences had a strong appetite for gritty, R-rated tactical action delivered directly through streaming.

Extraction 2, released in 2023, confirmed the franchise’s staying power. The sequel recorded 129.3 million views within its first 66 days, briefly landing in Netflix’s top ten most popular English-language films. Interestingly, while the sequel logged slightly fewer views than its predecessor, it surpassed the original in total hours watched, accumulating 278.7 million hours compared to the first film’s 266.6 million.

The data suggests one clear takeaway: once viewers hit play, especially during the film’s ambitious 21-minute “oner” prison sequence, they tend to stay until the credits roll.

Tyler Rake Heads Down Under

One of the most intriguing updates surrounding Extraction 3 is its change of location. While the first film unfolded in the sweltering streets of Dhaka and the sequel moved through icy European landscapes, the third installment will shift the action “down under.” Production will be based in Sydney, Australia, marking something of a homecoming for Chris Hemsworth, who is Australian-born.

Principal photography is expected to run from June through October 9, 2026. In addition to filming in Australia, insiders suggest the production may also shoot in several European locations during the summer months. This international approach has become a defining feature of the franchise. Previous films have transformed locations such as India, Thailand, and Prague into gritty action playgrounds. The shift to Australia could also hint at a storyline that explores Tyler Rake’s personal history, or a mission that hits far closer to home.

New Faces and Returning Legends

Although the full cast list remains under wraps, several familiar faces are expected to return. Chris Hemsworth will once again anchor the story as Tyler Rake, the relentless mercenary who continues to survive impossible odds.

Meanwhile, Golshifteh Farahani is widely expected to reprise her role as Nik Khan, Rake’s tactical partner and moral compass. Farahani previously hinted at an April 2026 timeline for her involvement, suggesting Nik will remain a central figure in the mission planning, even as she grapples with the loss of her brother, Yaz.

Another key figure set to return is Idris Elba, whose character Alcott appeared briefly at the end of Extraction 2. His mysterious intervention hinted at a broader geopolitical narrative, potentially expanding the franchise into the realm of state-sponsored espionage and covert operations.

At the same time, the production is expected to introduce several new characters to replace members of Rake’s depleted squad. With Yaz Khan gone, the casting team is reportedly seeking diverse international talent to maintain the global identity that has helped define the series.

When Will Extraction 3 Premiere?

Given that filming is not scheduled to wrap until late 2026, a 2026 release date is officially off the table. Historically, the Extraction films have required a lengthy post-production period to polish their intricate, long-take action sequences. 

The first film took 13 months from wrap to release; the second took 16 months. If Extraction 3 follows this trajectory, we are looking at a late 2027 or early 2028 release date. While that may feel like a lifetime in “internet years,” the quality of the previous entries suggests that the Russo Brothers and Hargrave prefer to cook until the action is perfectly choreographed rather than rush a subpar product to the queue. 

Building the Extraction Universe

Netflix’s ambitions for the franchise extend far beyond a single sequel. The company is actively expanding the Extraction universe, including a spin-off series currently in development titled Mercenary: An Extraction Series.

The show will reportedly star Omar Sy, best known for Lupin, and focus on a different mercenary operating across the Middle East and Africa. The project signals Netflix’s broader strategy: transforming Extraction from a successful action film series into a fully developed streaming franchise.

Extraction 3 is shaping up to be the most ambitious entry in the trilogy. With a reported budget expected to hover around the $100 million mark and a filming schedule that spans continents, Netflix is clearly doubling down on its most successful action intellectual property. As Joe Russo recently noted, they are “hard at work” on a story that explores the psychological aftermath of Rake’s missions while maintaining the franchise’s trademark brutality. 

For fans, the 2026 filming start date provides a definitive light at the end of the tunnel. Tyler Rake may be a man who “refuses to die,” but the wait for his return is finally coming to a head.
