When I think of tourists at the Empire State Building, a very specific vision comes to mind: a selfie stick extended to concussion-inducing heights, one of those slouchy safari hats, and a short-sleeve flannel tucked into some khakis. But Tom Holland just showed us that you can still go sightseeing without suffering in the style department.
Holland—who is currently promoting the upcoming Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day—probably wished that he could have strapped on his Spidey webs and yanked himself up the 1,860 steps when he visited the Manhattan tower during his press duties this week. Instead, he put foot to floor in a pair of well-loved Dice Los sneakers by Axel Arigato, a brand that the actor has a well-documented love for. His trousers were a pair of cozies that looked as good as they were functional. And on top, that’s where the money is. Regular tourists might opt for something waterproof and practical, made for standing in queues for viral $20 drinks, and Holland technically did the same—but it almost never looks this good.
Holland went for the Acne Studios Opado padded jacket in leather-trimmed black cotton. It’s a bit too preppy to be considered a chore jacket, and not athletic enough to be a bomber. Instead, this jacket sits beautifully in the wacky world of workwear, albeit with some very Acne-coded details. There’s a ribbed band at the bottom for a cinched look, a nice leather collar, and some buttons fastened at the sleeve.
Even with a $1,150 jacket on, Holland managed to capture the image of a cute NYC tourist hoping to prove to his mum that he was inside more monuments than pubs. Instead of an expected “I ♥︎ NY” shirt, he went for a double-layered combo of a white T-shirt under a navy V-neck —the type that would have made the bachelors in The Boyfriend all too proud. Holland’s pose even has that family-group-chat vibe, down to the hands crossed over his stomach and showing off those pearly whites.
So, next time you decide that a New York City trip is in your future, take a page out of Tom Holland’s book. Ditch the Arc’teryx jacket and belt bag and chuck on that workwear jacket. Your Instagram feed, and mum, will appreciate it.
