Ryan Gosling’s “Project Hail Mary” Just Made Box Office History

Nobody handed this one to Ryan Gosling. His track record as a lead in big-budget films has been inconsistent at best. Blade Runner 2049 and The Fall Guy both underperformed for their budgets. His name alone has rarely been the thing that sells a movie. And yet here we are. “Project Hail Mary” is tracking toward a $71.1M opening weekend, the best of 2026 so far and the biggest opening in Amazon MGM Studios history, surpassing “Creed III’s” $58.3M from 2023. The film earned $12M in previews alone. That is the second-best preview gross ever for a non-sequel, behind only 2017’s It, which pulled $13.5M. For a $200M original sci-fi film with no franchise safety net, those are extraordinary numbers.

“Project Hail Mary” is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there, light-years from Earth. Critics are calling it a rare crowd-pleaser with genuine intelligence, a blockbuster with brains and heart that actually earns its runtime. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 95%. The audience is responding accordingly.

The Numbers and What They Actually Mean

The context behind the figures matters. If the $71.1M opening holds, “Project Hail Mary” ties with Jordan Peele’s “Us” as the fourth-best opening ever for a non-franchise title. Only “Oppenheimer” ($82.4M), “I Am Legend” ($77.2M), and Avatar’s” original run ($77M) sit above it. That is a significant company for a film based on an IP most casual cinemagoers did not know before the trailer dropped.

The global picture is equally strong. The film is eyeing a $100M-plus worldwide opening across 82 markets.  Forecasters believe the domestic run could finish around $200M total. For Amazon MGM, a studio that has had its share of costly misfires, this is the kind of result that changes conversations internally. The studio needs “Project Hail Mary” to work to justify the scale of investment it is putting into theatrical releases. Right now, it is working.

The audience composition is also worth noting. PostTrak exits showed 61% male, 39% female. A 95% positive score. An 85% definite recommendation. Fifty-nine percent were between the ages of 18 and 34. That is a broad, engaged audience. Not a niche crowd. Not just book fans. The film is playing widely.

Why ‘Project Hail Mary’ Connected When Others Haven’t

The promotional campaign was unusually long and deliberate. Amazon MGM screened the film to the press as early as February 23 — close to a month before release. They showed footage at CinemaCon in April 2025. The first trailer dropped at San Diego Comic-Con in July to over 400 million views — the biggest trailer launch ever for a non-franchise film. This was not a film that snuck up on people. It was methodically built into an event.

Social media has been overwhelmingly positive. The 520.8M-strong social universe tracking the film is running 63% ahead of first-picture sci-fi norms. The comparisons circulating online are telling. Audiences are calling it better than recent “Star Trek.” Stronger than “The Martian” for some. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus describes it as a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart, carried by Gosling at his most winning. That kind of word-of-mouth does not stay contained to opening weekend.

The film’s visual approach is also distinctive. It was digitally produced and then transferred to film stock before being re-digitised to achieve the warmth of analogue film. The alien character Rocky is a full practical puppet creation by Neal Scanlan’s creature shop, brought to life by puppeteer James Ortiz. That choice to build a physical character rather than default to CGI has resonated deeply with audiences who have grown tired of weightless digital creations.

The Rest of the Weekend

“Project Hail Mary” is dominating, but the rest of the chart is moving too. Pixar’s “Hoppers” holds steady in second place with $21M in its third weekend, pushing its domestic total to $123.3M. Searchlight’s “Ready or Not 2” opens in third with an estimated $10M debut. The sequel was made for under $20M and carries a 91% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. It is a profitable weekend regardless of where it lands. Hindi action sequel “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” posted the biggest opening day ever for a Hindi film in North America, eyeing a $12.7M weekend across 967 locations. Universal’s “Reminders of Him” holds in fifth with $8.7M in its second weekend.

It is a genuinely healthy box office weekend. But there is no question who it belongs to. “Project Hail Mary” arrived at a moment when cinema needed exactly this kind of film. An original story. A committed star. A $200M budget spent on something that is not a sequel, a reboot, or a shared universe entry. It is a Hail Mary pass in more ways than one — and right now, it looks like it is going to connect.
