The wait for a first glimpse of HBO’s “Harry Potter” has been long. Production began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in July 2025. Months of set photos, casting announcements, and fan speculation followed. Now, the production team has finally opened the doors, and the first official images and trailer of the upcoming “Harry Potter” series are everything it needed to be.

The trailer shows the back of young Harry Potter, played by Dominic McLaughlin, approaching the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch on a snowy day in a red and gold Gryffindor cloak. His surname and player number are stitched on the back. Ahead of him, a crowd of students pours into the pitch beneath waving Gryffindor and Hufflepuff house flags.

Sharp-eyed fans will already have spotted the Fred and George banner in the corner, a detail that signals exactly how much care is going into building this world. Alongside the image, the show’s official Instagram dropped a teaser that gives the clearest indication yet of what this series intends to be. The HBO “Harry Potter” era has officially begun.

A New Hogwarts Built From the Ground Up

One trailer does not tell you everything. But it tells you enough. The version of Hogwarts taking shape here has been designed by production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, whose previous credits include Interview With the Vampire and Pachinko. Her involvement signals a creative ambition to build a school that feels grounded, textured, and distinctly its own. Respectful of the films that came before. Not beholden to them.

Principal photography began on July 14, 2025, under the working title “Dark Train,” at the same Leavesden facility where all eight original Harry Potter films were made between 2001 and 2011. Filming in the same location carries symbolic weight. The creative team has made clear, however, that this is not a retread.

Each season will adapt one of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, with the ambition of going deeper into the source material than two-hour films ever could. Warwick Davis, who returns as Professor Flitwick, has described it as retelling the stories with more depth and detail than audiences have seen before. That is the pitch. The first image suggests the production has the craft to back it up.

Dominic McLaughlin leads the series as Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The trio was announced in May 2025, with production beginning two months later. The supporting cast assembled around them is formidable.

John Lithgow takes on the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer plays Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost steps into the beloved role of Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu plays Severus Snape. Essiedu’s casting generated considerable conversation when it was announced. He has since spoken publicly about receiving racist death threats, including messages telling him to quit or face violence. He remains in the role. Further cast includes Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Lambert Wilson as Nicolas Flamel. Hans Zimmer is composing the score.

Every actor who has signed on has committed to a decade-long journey — the ambition is to see the full series through across all seven books. That kind of long-term creative commitment is rare in television. It is also exactly what this material requires.

What Daniel Radcliffe Said and Why It Matters

The original Boy Who Lived has been gracious throughout this process. Radcliffe has said publicly that he wrote to McLaughlin to wish him well with the part and has encouraged people not to ask the new cast to compare themselves to his own portrayal alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. He has also reflected honestly on why a new adaptation makes sense. He told Stephen Colbert that he was genuinely delighted that when his own child grows up and gets into Harry Potter, there will be a version to watch that does not star their father. Watching it with your dad, he noted, would take you out of it. It is a generous and self-aware observation from someone who spent a decade defining how the world pictured this character.

Filming for the first season is expected to continue until mid-2026, with production on the second season set to begin shortly thereafter. The series premieres on HBO in early 2027 with eight episodes in the first season.

The books have sold more than 600 million copies worldwide. The eight films grossed over $7 billion globally. The audience for this series already exists. The question has always been whether the production could honour that audience’s attachment to this world. Based on one carefully composed, detail-rich image taken on a snowy day at Hogwarts, the answer is looking increasingly like yes.
