3 Creative Last Minute Mother’s Day Gifts You’ll Love – Sydne Style

Need a last-minute Mother’s Day gift? I’ve got you covered. Besides fashion, I love getting crafty, and now that I have a kid, I get even more chances to do it! Here’s what we made for Preston’s grandma (GoGo) this year, plus a couple of other fun Mother’s Day gifts we’ve done in the past.

Mom tip

If you have a kid, I highly recommend investing in a photo printer. I debated whether to keep using Shutterfly or CVS, but I’m SO glad I got a home printer. I went for a regular Canon printer that also does photos (after way too much research), and I love it so much my parents ended up getting one too.

I’ve made three of these now, and they’re always a hit! I even did a Reels tutorial if you want to check it out, but here’s a quick rundown if you prefer reading:

  1. Print out faces of your kids or pets.
  2. Carefully cut out each face.
  3. Cut colorful craft paper into abstract flower shapes.
  4. Attach a pipe cleaner to each flower with tape.
  5. Use double-sided tape to stick the face onto the flower.

It’s so easy! You can pop them in a vase, or for an eco-friendly twist, reuse an empty Topo Chico bottle with a bow. Preston and I made one for his grandpa (Papa), and we also made a GoGo version with our faces and the dogs’ faces last Mother’s Day. This year, we even helped Preston’s friends make one for their mama too!

Since we did flowers last year, we went with a tree this time. I actually got the idea from this super cute lemon tree card my mom got my for my birthday. A tree is a little more effort but still pretty simple thanks to double-stick tape (seriously my crafting bestie). I got fancy and Photoshopped my boy’s faces onto peaches and apples. But you don’t need to do that. You can just cut out a face and stick it on a colorful paper shape (like a red circle for an apple, yellow oval for a lemon, etc). Here’s what to do:

  1. Tape popsicle sticks together to make the tree trunk.
  2. Tear green paper into pieces and use double-stick tape to attach as leaves.
  3. Print out faces of your kids or pets.
  4. Carefully cut out each face.
  5. Cut colored paper into fruit shapes.
  6. Use double-sided tape to stick the face onto the fruit, then tape the fruit to the tree.

Optional: Add non photo fruit. For our peach tree we use double stick tape to attach circle cutouts of orange and pink tissue paper. And for our apple tree I actually reused red stickers from Preston’s trash truck Halloween costume.

We used an old orchid vase from Trader Joe’s and filled it with dirt as the base. And I can’t remember where this mercury glass is from. An empty glass candle holder would work great too!

I spotted this DIY on Catie’s Classroom. She painted her popsicle sticks, but with a toddler, I like to save paint for outdoor crafts since it’s just too messy right now. So I used colorful popsicle sticks. You can see her version here, but here’s what I did:

  1. Tape two yellow popsicle sticks together with duct tape. Repeat four times (the last group should have three sticks).
  2. Cut a square piece of cardboard.
  3. Use duct tape to stick the popsicle sticks onto the cardboard.
  4. Add another popsicle stick at the bottom (I used purple and colored it black with a Sharpie).
  5. Stick on some stickers for headlights and write a license plate on white paper.

Optional: Catie used black popsicle sticks for wheels, but I got creative! Preston had some broken toy trucks, so I grabbed two wheels from an old garbage truck and glued them on. It’s the only part that needed a glue gun.
