Glen Powell’s upcoming Judd Apatow comedy finally gets its title and release date.
Powell is one of the biggest stars in modern Hollywood, transitioned from strong supporting turns in movies like Hidden Figures and Top Gun: Maverick, to emerge as a go-to leading man, heading up films like Hit Man and The Running Man. And with prominent roles on television with Scream Queens and Chad Powers, Powell’s star continues to rise.
The pairing of Powell with Apatow is an exciting one, with the Knocked Up director standing out as one of the most reliable names in Hollywood comedy. Apatow’s back catalog of movies includes such hits as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People, and Trainwreck, and he and Powell have teamed up to co-write the script for the upcoming comedy.
According to Universal, the movie, at one point untitled, will now be titled The Comeback King, and the movie is set for release in February 2027. The story follows a country western star reportedly in free fall, and also stars Cristin Milioti. Madelyn Cline, and Stavros Halkias, with Apatow also attached to direct.
The movie should allow Powell the chance to flex his comedic chops once again, following his leading turn as the titular Chad Powers in Hulu’s sitcom of the same name, which he also co-created. The Comeback King will see the 37-year-old pair with Universal again, following the hugely successful disaster movie Twisters.
Apatow has not helmed a feature film since 2022’s The Bubble, which he also wrote, and has explored documentary work in recent years. The 58-year-old will also produce, and has a strong working relationship with the studio, having made multiple movies with them, and this will be his first collaboration with Powell, who most recently starred in a voice role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
While it is almost a year before the movie is set to release, anticipation is bound to be high for this heavyweight pairing. Powell’s charisma, presence, and comedic timing have proven to be box office gold before, while Apatow is a steady and trusted hand to shepherd a broad, blockbuster comedy that should see a modest return for the studio.
Powell has already proven himself capable of heading up blockbusters like Twisters and The Running Man, and taking the lead in a comedy that he helped write is another feather in the actor’s cap. Whether The Comeback King will prove a success only time will tell, but it’s great to see Powell push himself as an actor, and explore a range of roles.
