New Chucky Movie Finds Director, Gets Continuity Update

This week, Chucky creator Don Mancini revealed that a new movie was in the works, and now, we know who will be handling the film, as well as some more information.

Who is directing the new Chucky movie?

According to a new report from Bloody Disgusting, and in unsurprising news, Mancini will not only be writing the new Chucky movie, but also directing it. It’ll be Mancini’s first time directing a proper movie starring the character since 2017’s Cult of Chucky. According to the report, the current plan is to also keep the movie in the same continuity of the previous films, as well as the three-season Chucky television show that aired from 2021-24.

The move also keeps Mancini involved in the franchise for the foreseeable future. Although he only wrote the first four Chucky movies, Mancini is known amongst horror fans as being heavily involved with the franchise, with the onmly project he wasn’t involved in being the Child’s Play remake in 2019.

To date, there have been eight movies set in the Child’s Play franchise, although the latest film, 2019’s Child’s Play, served more as a potential reboot to the franchise, and did not feature Mancini in any way. Bloody Disgusting’s previous report also mentions that they’ve been told the aim is to make the new movie “scary,” and throw it back to some of the earlier films, which remained scary while also retaining Chucky’s playful and funny nature as a horror icon.

The latest Chucky film that Mancini wrote and directed was 2017’s Cult of Chucky, which released direct-to-video and starred Fiona Dourif, Michael Therriault, Adam Hurtig, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly, and Brad Dourif. The Chucky television show, which ran for three seasons before being canceled in 2024, served as a sequel series to that movie.

Currently, it’s unclear if the upcoming Chucky movie will involve the actual story of the TV show, but it’s likely to feature many of the mainstays of the Chucky films, as Mancini often works with the same cast for a number of the films.
