Deadspin | The Open’s final round may shift to avoid World Cup clash

Something may have to shift with two of the planet’s most celebrated sports trophies on the line at the same time this summer.

The final round of The Open Championship could start earlier to avoid a clash with the World Cup final on July 19.

“We’re conscious of other events happening on that date,” R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said this week. “Of course, some things are out of our control in terms of playoffs and the like, but we will attempt to avoid a clash.

“I think we’re all looking forward to an England-Scotland final, so let’s see how that plays out.”

Golf’s oldest major begins July 16 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Sunday’s final round of the Open typically ends at around 1:30 p.m. ET with the presentation of the Claret Jug.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. ET.
