Donald Trump explained why he isn’t interested in wearing a bulletproof vest after multiple attempts on his life.

The 79-year-old president and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, were rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last weekend after an alleged shooter broke into the ballroom at the Washington Hilton. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump.

In 2024, he was shot in the ear while speaking at an election event in Butler, Pennsylvania. That September, the president was rushed to safety while on a golf course after an alleged threat was identified.

While speaking to the press in the White House on Thursday (April 30), Trump was asked if he would consider wearing a bulletproof vest to protect himself in the future. He had a shocking explanation for why it wasn’t something he was interested in.

“I don’t know if I can handle looking 20 pounds heavier,” he said. The president continued, seemingly referencing his security force and saying, “Some of these guys are physical specimens. Some of these guys travel. I don’t want to be near them.”

Trump admitted that he’d “I’ve “been asked about” wearing a vest, saying, “I guess it’s something you consider. In one way you don’t like to do it because you’re giving into a bad element. So I don’t know, but I have been asked to do it.”

The president also stressed that he isn’t consumed with concerns after the most recent alleged attempt on his life.

“I don’t think about it,” he said. “If I did, I wouldn’t be doing a very good job here.” He added, “If I did, I wouldn’t be effective.”

Trump recently had a very blunt response to allegations that the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was staged.
