In a world replete with IP resurrection, comedy graveyards only stay buried until the right creatives dig them back up. FX is heading back to one of the great ones, ordering “Very Young Frankenstein” to series for FX and Hulu, with WGA-winning screenwriter Stefani Robinson—best known for her work on FX’s “Atlanta”— Taika Waititi, and Mel Brooks among the executive producers behind the new comedy.

The series is based on 20th Century Studios’ “Young Frankenstein,” Brooks’ classic black and white horror-comedy riff on the Frankenstein myth, and features Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House. Robinson wrote the pilot, while Waititi directed it, putting the project squarely in the hands of two creators with a long FX history and rich comedy background.
Robinson, Waititi, and Garrett Basch previously worked across FX’s comedy ecosystem, including “What We Do in the Shadows,” which helped establish the network’s current appetite for genre comedy with a deadpan supernatural bite. “Very Young Frankenstein” appears to be cut from adjacent cloth: a familiar monster-movie foundation, rebuilt through a more modern, irreverent FX lens.
“‘Very Young Frankenstein’ blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, said. “In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika, and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it.”
Brook’s involvement gives the series its clearest link to the original film, which remains one of his defining comedies. Robinson and Waititi also make sense for the material, given their FX history with genre comedy and oddball ensembles. Galifianakis, Wells, and House round out the early cast, though FX has not revealed their roles or plot details.
