Clockwork, the specialized division at Warner Bros. led by former Neon executive Christian Parkes, hasn’t even begun to release a single movie yet, but it has consistently managed to win the press release taste battle. First it announced at CinemaCon that it will release Sean Baker’s next movie, then it said it was handling the repertory re-release of Ken Russell’s controversial “The Devils” playing in Cannes Classics, and now it decided to buy the starriest project on the Marche du Film.

Clockwork is in exclusive negotiations for the North American rights to “The Brigands of Rattlecreek,” the next film from director Park Chan-wook. Park is currently the jury president at Cannes this year, but that didn’t stop him from making a splashy deal for his own film. Deadline, which first reported the news, claims the deal for the title wound up in the mid-teens.

“Brigands of Rattlecreek” had arguably the most star power and prestige of any film being presented on the Cannes Market. It’s a Western that stars Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei, who starred in Park’s “Decision to Leave.” Here’s the logline for the film as it hit the market:

In the lawless frontier of the late 19th century, a small town sheriff and a mysterious stranger form an uneasy alliance to track down a ruthless gang responsible for a brutal robbery and massacre, leading them into a dangerous confrontation with a Native American tribe and a descent into their own personal madness.

The film is written by Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk”) with rewrites by Park, who is also producing alojng with Brad Fischer (“Zodiac”). Back Jisun for Moho Film, Mike Medavoy, and Georgia Kacandes are executive producers on the film. Clockwork is planning a theatrical release. WME Independent and CAA Media Finance co-repped sales rights.

Neon of course released Park’s last film “No Other Choice,” so a reunion, just as was the case with Baker and his next movie “Ti Amo!,” makes a lot of sense. That film made $40 million at the box office worldwide but missed out on an Oscar nomination, so it will be interesting to see what Park can do with a major studio marketing push. “Brigands” would also be his first English-language film since 2013’s “Stoker.”

A lot of the plans for this film and others that will inevitably be on Clockwork’s slate depend on Warner Bros.’ future under the wing of Paramount Skydance, but it’s clear that the powers that be are working to make an impressive and buzzy slate too good for Paramount to move on from. Until then, the re-release of “The Devils” comes out in theaters for a one-week special engagement this October.
