The 14-piece capsule from Gabriela Hearst and Paul Smith builds directly from photographs taken by Paul’s father.

Gabriela Hearst and Paul Smith are launching a 14-piece capsule on May 20, built from two photographs Paul Smith’s father took across the British countryside in the 1950s and ’60s.

Hearst, raised on an Uruguayan ranch where things lasted and every piece had a job to do, she has admired Smith’s work for years. The collaboration came together through their friendship and a shared instinct around family as a design source.

Silk satin trench coats and bias-cut slip dresses turn shifting horizons into clothes that flow on the body. Italian-made virgin wool barré suiting carries the all-over print work, with the prints adding play against the precision of the tailoring. Cashmere crewnecks come hand-knit by Manos del Uruguay in space-dyed Welfat yarn, made by the same nonprofit cooperative that backs economic independence for women in rural communities.

The Nina and Demi top-handles, both staples in the Gabriela Hearst line, take on the mountain and waterfall references in both literal and abstract treatments.
