Toy Story 5 is already shaping up to be the summer blockbuster Pixar desperately needs, but the studio clearly isn’t taking any chances. While longtime fans are already on board thanks to the return of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, Pixar is also making a play for a younger audience by shifting the focus to Joan Cusack’s Jessie, who finds herself trying to keep Bonnie from becoming obsessed with a new generation of tech-savvy gadgets.

And just to make sure that younger audience is paying attention, Pixar has enlisted one of the biggest stars on the planet. Taylor Swift has contributed an original song to the film’s soundtrack, titled “I Knew It, I Knew You.”

Written by Swift alongside frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, the song is being released in three exclusive versions through her website, including the film version, an acoustic version, and a piano version.

Taylor Swift’s Connection to Jessie

Director Andrew Stanton spoke about Swift’s involvement and why she was such a natural fit for the project:

“It’s incredible just how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song. Her connection to Jessie and the immediate way she understood what the character was going through was undeniable. The song is so deeply connected to Toy Story. So much so that on first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet.”

Why Pixar Is Betting Big on Jessie

The move makes a lot of sense. While Woody and Buzz remain the faces of the franchise, Jessie has always been one of the series’ most emotionally resonant characters. In Toy Story 5, she takes center stage as the story explores the growing influence of technology on kids and whether traditional toys still have a place in their lives.

Whether Swifties show up in droves remains to be seen, but the early box office forecasts are looking exceptionally strong. Many analysts believe Toy Story 5 could open north of $150 million domestically, which would make it the biggest debut in the franchise’s history.

While I’ve always felt that any Toy Story sequel after the near-perfect Toy Story 3 was somewhat unnecessary (I agree with Tarantino), Jessie’s story has always been one of the most affecting in the series. The “When She Loved Me” sequence in Toy Story 2 remains an absolute heartbreaker, and it will be interesting to see her finally take center stage. That said, I’m also glad Woody and Buzz are back—because let’s face it, it wouldn’t really be a Toy Story movie without them.
