When someone mentions the name Emilia Clarke, the first project that comes to mind right away is Game of Thrones. Clarke’s portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in all eight seasons of the HBO series still lives on as the most famous of her career, even now that plenty of other famous actors have played Targaryens thanks to the latest spin-off, House of the Dragon. After leaving Game of Thrones behind, Clarke joined the MCU a few years ago for one of the franchise’s most polarizing projects, Secret Invasion, which is still the lowest-rated MCU project in history. It was thought at one time that the MCU had larger plans for Clarke and her Secret Invasion co-stars, but after seeing how poorly the project was received by the masses, it’s unlikely any of its stars are ever seen in the franchise again.
Just because Clarke is done with both Game of Thrones and the MCU doesn’t mean she’s starving for projects, though. Earlier this year, she teamed up with tenured White Lotus veteran Haley Lu Richardson for a new spy thriller, Ponies, which is set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the 1970s. The show earned widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, including scores of 94% from critics and 83% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn’t make as much noise on streaming charts as some fans were expecting. This led Peacock to make a tough announcement this afternoon, when the streamer confirmed that Ponies has been canceled after only one season — the story of Beatrice Grant and Twila Hasbeck will not continue with more episodes.
What Is ‘Ponies’ About?
An official synopsis of Ponies, which also stars Adrian Lester and Artjom Gilz, reads as follows:
“Moscow, 1977. When their CIA operative husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances, two overlooked embassy secretaries — “PONIES” (Persons of No Interest) — refuse to accept the official story. Thrust into the world of Cold War espionage, Bea and Twila become unlikely CIA operatives, navigating Soviet danger and deadly conspiracies while proving they were never as invisible as anyone believed.”
Ponies was written and created for TV by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson — the latter is also known for his work as a producer on other popular shows such as Mad Men and Mr. Robot.
Check out all episodes in the first and only season of Ponies on Peacock and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Clarke’s future projects.
