“It would be nice if we could still come here until the end of the season.” What a lovely little house on the lake. Studiocanal has revealed the official trailer for the movie titled Visitation, a German film made by prolific filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff as his latest creation. Originally titled Heimsuchung in German, the film is about one house and the many people who have passed through it. Similar to Robert Zemeckis’ movie Here, but not exactly the same. A house locatd on a lakeshore near Berlin stands witness to a century of events that reshape the world around it: the rise of Nazism and the devastation of war, Soviet occupation, the reunification of Germany, and the dawn of a new era leading right to modern times. Carrying the marks of each new regime, generations come and go — a Jewish family, an opportunistic architect and his wife, an idealistic writer, and her granddaughter. 12 destinies searching for peace and belonging, while the house remains a haven through decades of turmoil. Starring Martina Gedeck, Lars Eidinger, Susanne Wolff, Ulrich Matthes, Detlev Buck, Michael Maertens, Wigand Witting, and Stella Denis-Winkler. This just premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and is set for a German release in October with the US to follow. This actually looks quite good, with some bright & vibrant cinematography following these stories.

At the heart of Visitation is a place: a house on a lake near Berlin, where three families live from the 1930s until the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Jewish family is forced to sell their house. An architect builds a house in the Bauhaus style and, after the war, tries to realize in East Berlin what was denied under the Nazis: to finally build on the GDR’s major construction projects. After his escape to the West, the house becomes a refuge for a writer couple upon their return from Soviet exile. Visitation tells the story of 12 people who dream of a home. But world history does not spare their small shore. The house remains nearly untouched by the passions and fates of its inhabitants. Visitation, also known as Heimsuchung in German, is written and directed by prolific German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff, director of many films including Degree of Murder, A Free Woman, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, The Tin Drum, Circle of Deceit, Swann in Love, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Ogre, Palmetto, The Ninth Day, Strike, Calm at Sea, Return to Montauk previously. Produced by Volker Schlöndorff & Regina Ziegler. Based on the book by Jenny Erpenbeck. This initially premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival out of competition. Studiocanal debuts Schlöndorff’s Visitation film in German cinemas on October 15th, 2026 this fall + also around the world later this year.
