“Dark Shadows” Now An Adult Animated Series

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has announced that it’s bringing back the 1960s cult Gothic soap opera TV series “Dark Shadows” – in a whole new way.

THR reports that the series, which follows the tormented vampire Barnabas Collins and his supernaturally dysfunctional family, is being reimagined as an adult animation series.

Dan Curtis created the original show which aired weekdays on ABC from 1966 to 1971 and quickly amassed a devoted following – becoming ABC’s highest-rated daytime series in 1969.

Spanning over 1200 episodes, the series featured nuanced character takes on ghosts, werewolves, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, and warlocks along with wild time travel and parallel universe elements.

The new show’s logline reads: “Blending gothic, horror, and supernatural genres, this coming adaptation promises all the dark twists and romantic intrigue that defined the transformational series across its 1200-plus episode run.”

The show also had several film adaptations, most famously Tim Burton’s 2012 feature which starred Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter.

Lisa Holdsworth (“Dreamers,” “Discovery of Witches,” “Call the Midwife”) will executive produce and be the showrunner. Cathy Curtis, Tracy Curtis, Eric Homan, Kevin Kolde and Fred Seibert executive produce.
