James Gunn‘s next DCU movie has opened in theaters, but its opening weekend performance isn’t meeting expectations. Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, is the next DC film following 2025’s Superman, where the House of the Dragon star plays Man of Steel’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl). Since its release, it has received mixed reviews from critics and a fair reception from audiences, but its box-office numbers aren’t worth celebrating.
Supergirl follows Kara (Alcock), who travels across the galaxy to celebrate her birthday as she struggles to adjust to life on Earth. During her journey, she meets Ruthye (Eve Ridley), whose quest for revenge against Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts), the leader of the Brigands, becomes personal for the Kryptonian superhero after Krem poisons Krypto. As of writing, Supergirl has earned $68 million worldwide, with $38 million generated during its domestic opening. That’s not bad, but Superman made over $125 million during its domestic opening.
Supergirl‘s domestic opening was so low that Sony’s infamous Morbius actually performed better, earning $39 million in its opening weekend in 2022. It’s also important to note that Morbius has a theatrical film re-release due to the internet memes “It’s Morbin’ Time,” a catchphrase inspired from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but was never said in the feature, as well the “we didn’t have time to watch Morbius” meme, where online users claimed that the theatrical window for Morbuis was too short, despite it being in cinemas for over two months, which had Sony believing that there was genuine interest for the Jared Leto-led film. The 2022 featured made over $167 million worldwide, and only time will tell if Supergirl will be able to surpass it.
Is Supergirl Worth Watching?
Since its release, Supergirl earned a 56% critics’ score and a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the film earned a 3.1 score on Letterboxd and a “B-” grade on Cinemascore. According to critics, many found the plot and writing poor, but praised Alcock’s performance. ScreenRant claimed that this version of Supergirl is a “hypocrite” and that the superheroine’s emotional journey was “muddled by everything going on around it,” like the plot and action scenes. Meanwhile, CBR praised Supergirl for exploring dark themes despite its PG-13 rating and for alluding to “very real world problems”. It also praised Jason Momoa‘s appearance as Lobo, but claimed he was just “tacked on” to the main story and that the story could have progressed without him. Therese Lacson gave Supergirl a score of 8/10, praising Alcock’s “powerful” performance as Kara, but claimed that Momoa’s Lobo felt like fan service rather than serving the narrative, and that the film missed an opportunity in its plot.
