At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a boat carrying a group of Indian tourists capsized off Vietnam’s southern island of Phu Quoc, according to local media.

According to Vietnam’s VnExpress website, the boat had 36 people on board when it overturned approximately 400 meters off the coast of May Rut Ngoai islet.

Multiple tourist and coast guard boats participated in the rescue effort, during which some people were safely rescued from the water.

Twenty-one people were rescued, and all the dead were recovered, authorities said.

What did the Indian embassy say?

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has released the names of all the 32 Indians onboard the boat.

“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago,” the Indian embassy in Vietnam said in an earlier statement on X on Saturday.

It said it has set up control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and at the Embassy in Hanoi to provide information and assistance.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the tourists were taking part in an annual meeting of a private mobile phone company. He wrote on social media that the Indian Embassy personnel were at the scene.

Many of those on board were Lava Mobile employees and distributors from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
