Official Trailer for Architecture Biopic Doc ‘Schindler Space Architect’

“An outsider on a path of his own. He was modern in the purist way.” A fascinating new film about houses & architecture. Abramorama has revealed their official trailer for an intriguing archi-biopic documentary film called Schindler Space Architect, examining the life and work of singular Austrian architect R.M. Schindler. This originally premiered in 2024 and has been playing at film festivals ever since. Architect R.M. Schindler’s life story (1887-1953) unfolds in parallel with that of Modern Architecture. The film follows his journey from Vienna through Chicago to Southern California, observing where possible through the lens of his own camera or listening to his own words. The story is told through narration, interviews, Schindler’s theoretical writings, correspondence, photos, renderings, archival and new footage of many of his buildings. It even has Frank Gehry talking about how he was his great inspiration while at university. Schindler Space Architect also features narration by Meryl Streep, with Udo Kier as the voice of R.M. Schindler. This looks incredibly interesting even if you’re not an architecture geek. I wish I could own one of his houses, too.

Austrian-born & educated, R.M. Schindler laid the foundation for what now is considered California lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living. This documentary explores his richly complex work, with its influences and illuminates Schindler’s philosophy of Space Architecture as contrasted with the International Style. It reexamines R.M. Schindler’s complicated relationship with his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright and his rival Richard Neutra. The film affirms the singular genius of this one man, and the eternal challenge that every artist faces to stay true to their vision in an effort to leave a lasting impact. Schindler Space Architect is a documentary film produced by and co-written by and directed by Bulgarian producer / editor / filmmaker Valentina Ganeva, making her feature directorial debut with this project. The film originally premiered at the 2024 Architecture & Design Film Festival in New York and then also played at the Newport Beach Film Festival that same year.
