“Oak Street” AI Dog Promo Video Draws Ire

Warner Bros. Pictures

A recent attempt to market David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming “The End of Oak Street” film opening this coming week has seemingly backfired.

The studio released an AI-generated 90-second clip on Instagram featuring a golden retriever named Goldie and French bulldog named Frenchie interviewing Starbuck, the dog from the upcoming film, which stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.

The clip was made in collaboration with ‘pawdcast’ DogPack, an account out of Montreal in which four brothers write comedy short scripts and then use AI generation tools to animate talking dogs. Their clips have gone viral on social media.

This clip, however, has generated talk for the wrong reasons. A large backlash is on both Reddit and X with confusion and rejection of the use of ‘AI slop’ involving dogs to promote a movie that’s basically about a suburban neighbourhood dealing with dinosaurs.

Various responses suggest it has had the opposite of its intended effect and has immediately turned people off from seeing the film.

The reaction was severe enough that Warner Bros. Pictures has seemingly removed the clip from its official Instagram account for the movie; nonetheless, it’s still floating out there online, including on the DogPack’s account.

J.J. Abrams produced the film, which opens in cinemas on Friday.
