Nick Offerman and Dennis Quaid have each featured in major projects already this year, but the duo is teaming up for a new crime thriller that just got its most exciting look yet. Quaid and Offerman will star alongside Jacob Tremblay (The Little Mermaid) in Sovereign, which is due in theaters on July 11, the same day as James Gunn’s Superman. Sovereign will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, and Collider is thrilled to partner with Briarcliff Entertainment to debut an exclusive clip from the film, which can be found below and shows Offerman’s Jerry Kane preaching a harmful sermon loaded with propaganda. The movie was written and directed by Christian Swegal, who previously made his screenwriting debut with Proud Mary, the 2018 action thriller starring Taraji P. Henson and Neal McDonough.
Sovereign, which is inspired by true events, follows a father and his teenage son (Offerman and Tremblay), who follow the Sovereign Citizen belief system, which is a deeply anti-establishment worldview rooted in government distrust. As the duo travels across the country delivering self-taught and managed seminars preaching against all the things they don’t believe in, they come in contact with Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Quaid). Their collision sets off a chain of events that forces all parties to reckon with power, principle, and the limits of freedom. It’s been a big year for Nick Offerman, who has already starred as General Sidney in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and he’ll narrate The Life of Chuck, which comes to theaters on June 13. Quaid recently led the Paramount+ series Happy Face, and he stars alongside Wyatt Russell in the Western Broke.
Does ‘Sovereign’ Have a Trailer?
Briarcliff Entertainment has yet to release the first official trailer for Sovereign, but considering the film is coming out in roughly two months, it’s likely coming soon. It’s possible the first trailer will debut this weekend alongside the film’s release at the Tribeca Film Festival, but if not, it certainly won’t be long before it drops. Thomas Mann, Nancy Travis, and Martha Plimpton have also been tapped for roles in Sovereign, and the film is rated R for violence and language and comes in at a concise runtime of one hour and forty minutes.
Sovereign hits theaters on July 11. Check out the new sneak peek at the film above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of all of Quaid and Offerman’s future projects.
