Sunrise Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Italian director Piero Messina’s unconventional sci-fi film “Another End” starring Gael García Bernal and Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”) star as lovers caught in an unusual bind.
Sunrise Films, a U.K.-based production and distribution company headed by Rupert Preston and Nigel Williams, acquired the film from France’s Studio TF1.
The plan is to release “Another End” in U.S. theatres on Sept. 19.
Set in a near-future when a new technology exists that can put the consciousness of a dead person back into a living body in an attempt to ease the grief of separation, the English-language film sees Bernal play Sal, a man who loses his wife. Reinsve plays Zoe, the woman who rents her body for the implantation of Bernal’s wife’s consciousness. Rounding out the cast are Bérénice Bejo, as Sal’s sister Ebe, and
Olivia Williams (“Dune: Prophecy”).
“Another End,” which world premiered positively from the 2024 Berlin Film Festival, is produced
by Italy’s Indigo Film with RAI Cinema. It marks Messina’s followup to “The Wait” starring Juliette Binoche, that had launched from Venice.
“Piero Messina’s melancholy sci-fi romance has too many obvious forebears for its twists to pack much surprise, but the attractive cast and polished filmmaking offer pleasures of their own,” wrote critic Jessica Kiang in her Variety review.
Sunrise’s head of U.S. and International distribution Andrew Nerger called “Another End” “a rare film that manages to be both deeply moving and visually audacious,” he said in a statement, adding: “With Piero Messina’s singular vision and an extraordinary international cast, we’re proud to bring this beautiful story to U.S. audiences.”
