Having completed two full weeks in theaters worldwide, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning passed an important milestone. The eighth installment of the long-running action franchise — it was marketed as the final chapter — reportedly cost a whopping $400 million to produce. What this means is that the movie will need to make at least $800 million worldwide in order to break even, going by the rule of thumb. After its third weekend of release, The Final Reckoning can proudly say that it’s halfway there. The movie passed the $400 million mark at the global box office, as it continues to struggle with divisive reviews and audience response.
With nearly $150 million domestically and around $300 million from overseas markets, the film’s cumulative global haul stands at $450 million. This weekend, The Final Reckoning overtook J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III ($399 million), and past Tom Cruise movies such as The Mummy ($409 million) and Rain Man ($412 million). The Final Reckoning has now also overtaken the largely overlooked Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which made around $430 million worldwide over two decades ago. The movie’s legacy remains shaky, with series creator James Cameron and star Linda Hamilton both declining to return for it, and producer Andrew J. Vajna admitting to Empire that it felt like running away with someone’s baby. Funnily enough, both Terminator 3 and The Final Reckoning are about a nuclear apocalypse spurred on by AI.
The Mission: Impossible movies have had their own epic production history; the franchise began in 1996 with Cruise and Paula Wagner serving as producers, and witnessed the arrival of Abrams some years later as a production partner on a couple of installments. The last four movies, however, have been spearheaded by Cruise’s frequent collaborator, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie. In fact, he’s responsible for two of the three highest-grossing installments of the series, with Mission: Impossible – Fallout leading the pack. It generated nearly $800 million worldwide, and earned a near-perfect 98% Rotten Tomatoes score.
‘The Final Reckoning’ Is Poised to Pass Two Landmark Cruise Hits
The critical response to The Final Reckoning has been less positive. Although it holds a “certified fresh” 79% Rotten Tomatoes score, criticisms have been made of its complicated plot and treatment of certain characters. However, two action set pieces — one set underwater and the other in the air — have received universal acclaim. The Final Reckoning will next set its sights on passing the $457 million lifetime global haul of Mission: Impossible and the $456 million haul of Cruise’s The Last Samurai. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
