Cillian Murphy’s Long-Awaited Return as Thomas Shelby Gets Netflix Release Update

It’s official, Cillian Murphy will be back in his cap and three-piece suit as Tommy Shelby, and fans finally have an idea of when to expect it. The Immortal Man: A Peaky Blinders Film is set to hit Netflix in 2026, marking the first time we’ve seen Tommy since season 6 wrapped in early 2022. Four years is basically forever in streaming time, but for Tommy Shelby, it feels about right — the man thrives on absence, smoke, and myth.

Directed by Tom Harper and written by series creator Steven Knight, The Immortal Man drops Tommy Shelby into the chaos of World War II. Alongside Murphy, the cast is stacked with names like Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Jay Lycurgo, Ned Dennehy, Sophie Rundle, Silo‘s Rebecca Ferguson, Stephen Graham, and more. But not everyone’s making the jump to the big screen. Sam Claflin, who made such a chilling impression as real-life fascist Oswald Mosley, has confirmed he won’t be back. Speaking while promoting his new Count of Monte Cristo adaptation, Claflin admitted:

“I don’t know that I should not say anything, and keep the speculation going… but no, sadly, I’ll share – I’m not in the film, though I’m so excited as a fan of the series. I don’t know any details other than the casting and some of the people in it. I’m thoroughly excited.”

It’s a shame, because Mosley’s season 5 and 6 clashes with Tommy gave the show some of its most electric tension. His marriage to Lady Diana Mitford (Amber Anderson) in Germany closed that chapter in 1936, but the timing means The Immortal Man could easily pick up with Europe unraveling all around him.

Why Did Cillian Murphy Return for Peaky Blinders?

As for Murphy, he told The Observer exactly what this return means:

“I did work out that I’ve been playing the character for a quarter of my life, which is kind of mad. Because we got a really good script, and I have a sense of duty to the fans because, in many ways, they made the show the success that it is. It’s a proper bookend to the whole 36 hours of television.”

Netflix has yet to drop a date, but a first-half 2026 release feels likely, especially since filming wrapped back in December 2024, and Murphy’s words all but confirm this will be Tommy’s last ride.
