Disney+ just released the trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, and it looks like we’re finally going to get an appropriate The Sea of Monsters adaptation. Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on Disney+ in 2023 and earned a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes in its first outing, a win for fans of Rick Riordan’s fantasy novels.
Viewers did not have to wait long to learn that season 2 was in production, with the announcement coming only a few weeks after the season 1 finale in early 2024. Now, Percy Jackson season 2 is set to premiere on December 10, 2025, adapting The Sea of Monsters and hopefully redeeming the 2013 film of the same name.
Percy Jackson Season 2 Looks Much Better Than 2013’s Sea of Monsters Movie
A full-length trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 premiered on November 6, 2025, and from the scenes shown in the 2-minute and 30-second trailer, fans can relax knowing this adaptation of the second book in Riordan’s series will likely do more justice to his story than the 2013 film starring Logan Lerman.
The Sea of Monsters is the sequel to The Lightning Thief and finds Percy and his friends setting out to find the Golden Fleece to save Camp Half-Blood from Luke and the titan Kronos, a journey which takes them to the “Sea of Monsters”. The Sea of Monsters is where the Percy Jackson series starts to come into his own.
From the looks of this full-length trailer, Disney is taking that charge seriously. There’s been an obvious budget increase in the series, which is fairly critical for this season, considering a lot of it takes place at sea and involves massive creatures. Most importantly, season 2 seems entirely focused on the second book, which the 2013 movie didn’t.
What Went Wrong With The Percy Jackson Movie Franchise
The Percy Jackson movie franchise sort of tripped at the starting line. Despite the goodwill towards the books and the anticipation of a big-screen adaptation for a popular fantasy series in the vein of the Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter, fans instead got a highly edited and condensed version of the novels.
The movies, beginning with 2010’s The Lightning Thief, changed and added scenes with little improvement to the story. From the first trailer, it was clear something was up. The characters in Percy Jackson are supposed to be pre-teens, and their growth throughout the books is supposed to take time. These kids are supposed to be in peril.
Aging up the characters fast-forwarded character arcs that were better in the books, taking away the tension. Scenes were removed, and monsters from later books were incorporated too early. It gives the movies, particularly Sea of Monsters, a disjointed and unfinished feeling. Hopefully, Disney’s Percy Jackson will redeem those films.
