James Cameron is sharing a controversial opinion about films in the streaming era.

The 71-year-old Titanic filmmaker made an appearance on The Town with Matt Belloni.

During the appearance, he discussed Netflix, the Academy Awards, and qualifying for awards.

“The Oscars mean nothing to me if they don’t mean theatrical,” James explained.

“Netflix should be allowed to compete if they put the movie out for a meaningful release in 2,000 theaters for a month.”

Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos recently called theatrical releases outdated, causing controversy among directors.

“Folks grew up thinking, ‘I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them [and to have them] play in the theater for two months and people cry and sold-out shows … It’s an outdated concept,” the CEO said.

James Cameron recently gave an update on Avatar 4 and 5, after previously saying he might pass them on.
