Final Fantasy, Octopath Traveler Meet In Huge New Free RPG

Anyone looking forward to new Steam titles might think of Octopath Traveler 0, a game that released on December 4, 2025. This game was the third of its series, but took a unique approach to its gameplay that was different from what had come before. Those looking for a more traditional JRPG similar to the first Octopath games will be happy to know another title aims to emulate that classic style.

While not released on the platform just yet, Suikoden STAR LEAP is a JRPG releasing to Steam later this year, likely early into 2026 or sometime before 2025 ends. This game is not only completely free, but also emulates the charm of Octopath Traveler‘s artistic style. According to its Steam Page, there are many gameplay details that are sure to get fans of the genre excited about its future.

Suikoden STAR LEAP has the same graphical style as the Octopath Traveler titles, with 2D sprite-based characters in a gorgeously 3D world. The backdrops of areas are incredibly detailed, with a variety of people moving through them that look pulled straight out of an older Final Fantasy game. Locations and characters are expressed with extraordinary detail, adding to the immersive quality of the game.

This game is set within a unique fantasy world, where Runes are connected to the land’s creation in its history. Beyond the protagonist Hero, many characters shape this game, across a variety of grand cities, villages, and wild lands in between each. Developed by Konami, this game is set to feature a vast story with plenty of twists and turns for players to enjoy along the way.

As of this time of writing, it’s unclear how much of STAR LEAP will be among Steam’s free games on launch. Some elements of the game may require you to spend real-world money, especially if it’s for expanded content.

Many of the features in STAR LEAP seem to have JRPG aesthetics, including anime-inspired designs for its characters. The systems, story, and key elements of this game are meant to harken back to “traditional” RPGs, such as Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger. The sprite-based style certainly adds to this focus, but the game blends different elements together to achieve this mission too.

This game’s combat features a single Hero protagonist and a party of three other characters alongside him, in a nearly nostalgic expression of a JRPG battle system. Much like the Octopath Traveler game’s roster, you’ll be able to find other characters and recruit them to your party, mixing and matching your favorites to build the best team imaginable for any situation.

However, where STAR LEAP differs from other games in its genre is how it introduces real-time tactical strategy to some of its battles. Players can command groups of warriors together, attacking enemy armies in large-scale conflicts that will see individual battles play out. Leading multiple groups of allies is sure to inspire memorable moments, especially as you get to know certain characters more in the story.

With Octopath Traveler 0 having been released to mixed reviews by series fans, perhaps this game’s traditional approach is more appealing. While not out on Steam just yet, there’s no doubt Suikoden STAR LEAP will be a great experience for players who’ve enjoyed classic JRPG adventures with Octopath or the Dragon Quest remake’s excellent 2D/3D artstyle.
