For the first time since being stripped of his title, Former Prince Andrew returned to a royal setting as he and Sarah Ferguson arrived quietly for the christening of their granddaughter, Athena.

What was meant to be an intimate family event for Princess Beatrice became a rare moment when private tensions and public scrutiny overlapped.

Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi gathered close friends and family at the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace to baptize their daughter Athena, who was born several weeks early in January.

Guests included Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, as well as European royals such as Princess Nina of Greece and Denmark, a godmother to Athena.

Singer James Blunt, a longtime friend of Beatrice, was also seen entering the palace.

King Charles was invited but was not expected to attend. Princess Anne was away at Sandhurst, while Prince William and Kate Middleton also did not participate in.

Attention shifted the moment Former Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson arrived.

It marked the first time they had entered a royal palace since losing their titles in the aftermath of renewed revelations linking Andrew to Jeffrey Epstein.

A source admitted earlier in the week, “It’s going to be a royal occasion, but everyone is dreading the thought of seeing Andrew there.”

Beatrice has remained close to her mother throughout the turmoil, but her relationship with Former Prince Andrew has been more fragile. Even so, she extended an invitation, guided by concern rather than comfort.

An insider explained to the Daily Mail, “Beatrice has, of course, invited her father. But things are not warm between them. However, she’s worried about him. He’s going through a low ebb with his mental health, and she recognises that he dotes on his grandchildren and it would be cruel to deprive him of the chance to attend the christening.”

The source added, “Some careful conversations and diplomacy with King Charles will have taken place to get to this stage.”

Though present, Andrew kept out of official photos and avoided any moments where cameras were positioned.

The family intended for the day to remain centered on Athena, despite the unavoidable tension that accompanied his presence.

The events that removed Former Prince Andrew from public life remain a heavy burden.

In October, he was stripped of his royal titles after a leaked email revealed he had lied during his BBC Newsnight interview.

He had insisted he never had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein after 2010, though he had been photographed with him later that same year.

The scandal was so disruptive that Athena’s christening may have been delayed because of it.

Her sister Sienna was baptized within six months of her birth, while Athena’s ceremony took place nearly a year after her arrival.

A source close to the planning acknowledged the significance of the moment, saying, “Beatrice is determined to keep the focus entirely on her daughter, but there is no escaping the moment’s significance as this will be the former Duke and Duchess of York’s first appearance at a Royal Family event and possibly the last time he steps foot in St James’s Chapel.”

Amid the broader royal concerns, Sarah Ferguson’s appearance underscored the support she has continued to provide her daughter.

Beatrice has spoken openly about the fear and isolation she felt when Athena was born prematurely on January 22.
