James Gunn’s DCU is heating up as new heroes and villains join the lineup, with the latest addition standing out as a powerful hero that could rival Superman himself. Earlier in 2025, the DCU finally introduced the world to David Corenswet’s Superman on the big screen, but his position as the world’s greatest hero could already be at risk.
While we know that the hero will be fighting powerful foes like Brainiac in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, a recent report has confirmed that another hero will be joining the lineup in Creature Commandos season 2. But what makes this character stand out is the ridiculous level of power they possess in the comics.
Captain Atom Is Joining The DCU In Creature Commandos Season 2
Nexus Point News confirmed that Captain Atom is set to join the cast of Creature Commandos in season 2. And following their reports, James Gunn posted images on his Instagram story that feature the character fighting Superman, which appears to confirm the news.
In DC Comics, Nathaniel Adam is a Vietnam veteran who develops incredible powers after a military experiment goes wrong. Coming close to death, the character ended up being imbued with powers from the Quantum Field, which granted him extraordinary abilities, including flight, invulnerability, energy absorption, super strength, and speed. But those are just the powers that mirror Superman.
Captain Atom also has the ability to travel through time, reshape reality at will, and create matter from nothing. All the while, his physical body was transformed to have an impenetrable metal skin. Evidently, he is a character who could rival anyone currently in the DCU, including Superman himself.
How Strong Is Captain Atom Compared To Superman?
In the comics, Captain Atom has been seen doing a number of things that are usually considered impossible. From breaking Green Lantern constructs created by the legendary Hal Jordan, to punching Firestorm out of his Firestorm Matrix, Captain Atom shattered the limits of what is possible.
But beyond that, he has had encounters with a powerful superhero who is very similar to Superman, known as Mr. Majestic, who he was able to knock out with one punch. In addition, in a recent comic book run, DC K.O.: Superman vs, Captain Atom, Captain Atom got the upper hand and even killed Superman, before the story took a turn and brought Superman back with similar powers to give him the chance to win.
However, if Superman was not the flagship hero for DC in the way that he is today, it’s highly likely that Captain Atom would have remained the victor.
Captain Atom Deserves To Be In James Gunn’s Justice League
Despite first appearing in comics in 1960 as a hero co-created by Steve Ditko, the co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, the character did not appear in DC Comics until the mid-1980s, when he was also given the identity of Nathaniel Adam.
But since that time, he has yet to appear in any live-action project. He has been seen in a handful of animated DC shows, but his debut in the DCU could finally provide the character with an opportunity to shine and gain the notoriety that they deserve.
Considering their immense power, it would also make sense to have a character like this align with the heroes, and potentially even join the Justice League. Clearly, Gunn is shining a spotlight on lesser-known characters and changing up the dynamics of his DC Universe, so why not let Captain Atom step up after arriving in Creature Commandos season 2?
