I’ve done yoga a few times. I’m not consistent with it. I like to mix it up. But the main thing is discipline. Discipline’s the key to any sort of success, really, especially when it comes to your health and fitness. So just being disciplined, and that’s more important than anything. I think I’ve always been pretty good about that.
Do you believe in cheat days?
Oh, yeah. Every weekend! You got to have something to look forward to. I’m all about that balance. I’m not a calorie counter or anything. I just believe in the sensible looking plate, and then on the weekends, I go nuts. I’ll crush 20 tacos, full pizza, whatever.
It’s not really a cheat day, but I love sleeping in. That’s what I look forward to on the weekends.
That’s my favorite thing in the world. Sleeping is so underrated. I love sleeping. That’s a guilty pleasure. I’ll sleep in maybe to about noon. But even sleeping until 9 is amazing.
I’m a big fan of power naps. Like yesterday before I did the tree lighting, I was going 100 miles an hour at 6 in the morning. I shut it down for a good 30-minute nap, and I was a new man. To shut down, make it dark and cold. I like the little face masks. It’s like having a big energy drink. I love naps. I think they’re so powerful. I’m hoping I take one later today.
You’ve obviously lived a very public life; you’re on camera a lot. How has that affected your relationship with your body, like seeing yourself on big screens and on TV all the time?
I guess I’ve never really thought about it, but I’m always advocating for health and fitness. I was a former Boys & Girls Club kid, and I’m a fitness ambassador for them, proud to continue working with those guys. I’m always writing programs, so I don’t want to look hypocritical and be a sloppy mess while I’m doing that. It’s not just part of my lifestyle, but who I am—trying to advocate for people to live a healthy life, starting with my family.
Have you had any gnarly injuries along the way?
Yes, unfortunately. They’ve all been from boxing and hardcore sparring. I’ve torn my rotator cuff, I’ve torn both of my biceps. I’ve torn my Achilles.
That’s my biggest fear.
Oh, man. It’s not as painful as you would think. You just can’t do anything, and the recovery takes forever.
How’d you tear your Achilles?
Boxing. All of them were boxing or sparring! It’s an explosive sport, and that’s what happens when you get older. Your tendons and ligaments sometimes can’t keep up. Achilles is like an older guy thing. ACLs, those are different. But Achilles, you’re not working for a while.
It’s such a thing in the NBA. So when I watch basketball, I’m like, “Oh, that could happen to me,” but then you realize they’re going way faster and way harder than you.
Everybody you probably think of hurt it a little older, though. Kobe…
That’s true, that was rare. He had a pre-existing injury, though. You’re almost egging it on at that point.
Growing up, were you playing the traditional team sports too? Or was it always the fighting ones?
Always the individual sports, because with theater and acting and all that, it wasn’t really fair to do the team sports, because you had to be there. In the individual sports, you just had to beat out one guy who was in your weight class. I love baseball, but again, it wasn’t fair to the team. Wrestling, jujitsu, boxing, that always seemed to work out. Kind of float in and out, just beat the guy in your weight class, and there you go. You’re good.
You were never worried about getting a black eye and having to be on camera the next day?
They were never happy about it, but I’d wear head gear. I still got bumps, bruises, and little shiners and stuff, but got a good makeup guy.
You have three kids now. Is it important to you that they live an active lifestyle?
Yes, and they do. My daughter dances, does competitive cheer. She loves working out too. So does my wife. We met here on Broadway. She’s very athletic, and really into fitness too. My boys wrestle, do jujitsu, and do Muay Thai. That’s one of the things we do together, train Muay Thai. We’re sparring all around the same time, so it’s kind of cool.
